Ticket sales for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story went on sale in the US in the wee hours of Monday morning, November 28, and in the process had the second highest first-day ticket pre-sales in domestic box office history…

If you were one of those few Star Wars fans that were worried Rogue One: A Star Wars Story wouldn’t do so well in box office sales, then perhaps today’s bit of news may change your mind, as the film’s first-day ticket sales landed in the number two spot for highest ticket pre-sales in domestic box office history, right behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Variety is reporting that both Fandango and MovieTickets.com are reporting that Rogue One set the record for the highest pre-sales of 2016. This really should come as no surprise, as the very first Star Wars standalone film waited to put tickets on sale until the very end of November, just a few weeks away from the worldwide premiere of the film. Fans were literally clamoring to purchase opening night tickets.

According to Variety, at this time, Rogue One is tracking to open just north of $130 million. By comparison, The Force Awakens opened to a whopping $248 million. Imax Entertainment CEO Greg Foster had this to say about the Rogue One and the public’s optimism in the film:

"“There’s a strong sense of optimism about the movie. There’s a sense that the consumer marketplace has embraced the film in its first 36 hours.”"

If all goes well, Rogue One will cap off an amazing year at the box office for Disney. In 2016, the company saw massive success with films like Moana, Doctor Strange, Finding Dory, Zootopia, and The Jungle Book.
