Star Wars: Episode VIII News Roundup — Phasma Speaks Out, Kylo’s Mask, Williams Begins Score!
We are a month away from 2017 and the hype for Star Wars: Episode VIII is already building like a runaway rancor. Today, we have three pieces of Episode VIII news to help keep you excited for the sequel to The Force Awakens…
Our first piece of Star Wars: Episode VIII news comes from a quirky but quick interview that Entertainment Weekly did with Game of Thrones star Gwendoline Christie, who just so happens to also play Captain Phasma in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
EW asked the star if there was any information she could give them on Episode VIII, to which she replied: “No.” She did defend J.J. Abrams choice to keep Captain Phasma a mystery in The Force Awakens, however, which was something many Star Wars fans were a bit nonplussed about.
Finally, Christie did say one thing regarding Episode VIII. And while I am going to pull her quote from EW, I also will pull EW‘s description of Christie as she gave her quote so that you can get the full effect:
"“I don’t think anyone’s going to be disappointed,” she added, and then she made this remarkable expression – her eyebrows shot up, her eyes got wide, and she clamped her lips shut as she smiled, as if thinking about some intensely exciting secrets she’s just bursting to reveal … but absolutely positively will not."
Well now, color me intrigued! Moving on, we also have some information on Kylo Ren’s mask in Episode VIII. As you may remember from The Force Awakens, he took his mask off to talk to his father, before killing him, then it seemed as if he never recovered it before that climactic fight with Rey in the snowy forest before Starkiller base was destroyed. This, of course, left many Star Wars fans believing that Kylo Ren would get a new mask in Episode VIII, as he had lost his original one in The Force Awakens.
In a recent interview with BBC News, Adam Driver (Kylo Ren) jokingly talks about wearing his mask all the time so that no one can see his facial expressions. That bit comes around the 3:20 mark. Check it out:
Now, we’ve recently had reports from Making Star Wars that Kylo Ren would get a wardrobe “upgrade” in Star Wars: Episode VIII. Could a new mask be in the works as well? Or, did General Hux retrieve Ren’s mask, as well as his unique crossguard lightsaber, when Supreme Leader Snoke told him to bring Kylo Ren to him? I guess we will have to wait a while to find out.
Finally, and this is probably the most exciting news of the day, legendary composer John Williams has confirmed to Variety, that he will be starting the process of recording and scoring Star Wars: Episode VIII this month!
"Williams concedes that he had hoped for greater commercial success for “The BFG,” which was deemed a box-office disappointment after its July 1 release. His next film, however, won’t be: He begins recording “Star Wars Episode VIII” in December and expects to record off and on through March or April 2017"
Nothing makes me happier, as a Star Wars fan, than to hear that John Williams is once again in the studio preparing to record another score for yet another Star Wars film. I get goosebumps just thinking about it.
