Preview Of Michael Giacchino’s Rogue One Score Released

Entertainment Weekly released a preview of two of the tracks from Michael Giacchino’s score of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Hear it below.

Yesterday, Entertainment Weekly released the first preview of Michael Giacchino’s Rogue One score. We have to admit, it sounds like a perfect fit for the galaxy far, far away.

Take a listen below.

Two tracks are previewed in this video: “Her Path is Clear” and “Approach to Eadu.” The “her” in the first track refers to Jyn, presumably. And according to Entertainment Weekly, “Eadu” is the name of a storm-drenched planet the Rogue One team visits in the movie.

The snippets of these tracks heard in the video sound like they accompany scenes in which a lot of activity is happening. In “Her Path is Clear,” the music is cohesive throughout and reminds me of a theme, like the Rebel Alliance theme or “Imperial March.” The music of second track, “Approach to Eadu,” hits a lot of different notes at a fast pace. It is as if each note change accompanies a corresponding action in the movie.

The most important thing about these two tracks is how much like Star Wars they sound. For example, the use of wind instruments, like the trumpet, are classic John Williams. Yet, at the same time, the musical profile Michael Giacchino created for Rogue One is unprecedented. He discovered the perfect balance of classic Star Wars musical elements and his own style for this score. No easy feat, considering Giacchino follows after Williams’s seven-Star Wars-movie legacy.

There is a lot of pressure riding on Disney’s first Star Wars standalone movie soundtrack to live up to nearly forty years of themes like “Imperial March” and “Binary Sunset.” But if “Her Path is Clear” and “Approach to Eadu” are any indication, Giacchino is more than up to the challenge.

The official soundtrack for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, composed by Michael Giacchino, releases December 16th on digital and CD.

Rogue One premieres in theaters in the U.S. on December 16th.
