Rogue One: A Star Wars Story has had its opening weekend, and now the numbers are. And according to the numbers, the film has taken its place as the second biggest December opening of all time…
According to Entertainment Weekly, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story had an opening weekend of $155 million domestically over three days, and $290.5 million globally. Rogue One still sits behind 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ gigantic opening by roughly $100 million.
EW also ran down the numbers on who purchased tickets to see Rogue One.
- The weekend audience was comprised of 59 percent men
- 74 percent were adults
- 62 percent of all ticket buyers saw Rogue One in 2D
- 38 percent saw Rogue One in 3D
- And, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story earned a grade of A on CinemaScore, a score that is aggregated from actual moviegoers.
Rogue One also notched an additional $29.2 million from 708 IMAX screens, which makes the film the second biggest December IMAX opening of all time, just behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens. That’s a lofty number and place to take, in the history of box office recording.
For comparison, here is how the 2016 box looks, currently:
1. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story – $155 million
2. Moana – $11.7 million
3. Office Christmas Party – $8.5 million
4. Collateral Beauty – $7 million
5. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them – $5 million
6. Manchester by the Sea – $4.2 million
7. La La Land – $4 million
8. Arrival – $2.8 million
9. Doctor Strange – $2 million
10. Nocturnal Animals – $1.4 million
Looks like the sky (or the galaxy) is the limit for Gareth Edwards’ Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and we should see those number grow even more, over the next few weeks, as the Christmas holidays are upon us and moviegoers are out seeing the film, most likely multiple times.
