Speaking of hope, no character brings more hope and joy to Rogue One than Chirrut Imwe. His cheery disposition is ironic considering all the cards stacked against him. First, he is blind. Second, his city is raped of its holy kyber crystals by the Empire. Later, his city is completely destroyed by the Death Star.

Yet, the expression worn most on Chirrut’s face is a smile. How is this possible?

"“I’m one with the Force. The Force is with me. I’m one with the Force. The Force is with me.”"

Chirrut can smile because he has faith in the Force. True, he can’t use it like the Jedi and the Sith can. But he can feel its presence all around him, and he believes it guides his fate. As he says to the stormtroopers on Jedha, “All is as the Force wills it.” And his faith does not go unrewarded. In one of his final scenes, the Force protects him from the deathtroopers’ shots.

One thing we lack in society today is faith: faith in each other and in ourselves. For some people, faith in God is important while others’ trust rests in nature. But these are dark times. And just like the Rebellion, we constantly need new hope and new inspiration. Chirrut inspires us to have faith in something, to believe in something with all our hearts. Even in death, he gives us hope. Because he believes in the Force even unto the end, he gives us the strength to believe, too. And that’s why he is the best new character in Rogue One.
