Saw Gerrera Featured In Star Wars Rebels January Premiere Promo

Saw Gerrera, played by Forest Whitaker in Rogue One, heads to Star Wars Rebels in the January 7th two-part premiere promo.

Star Wars Rebels returns to Disney XD for season 3 part 2 on Saturday, January 7th. The two-part premiere sees The Ghost rebels meet a familiar face from Rogue One.

In Rogue One, Mon Mothma called Saw Gerrera “an extremist.” In the above promo, Hera Syndulla says much the same thing about the Onderon rebel. Even Ezra Bridger goes so far as to say Saw is “no better than the Empire.” I guess a guy who would shoot a Geonosion embryo in its egg-shell is pretty extreme.

Actually, Saw is probably feeling desperate. Star Wars Rebels creator Dave Filoni hinted as much to Entertainment Weekly.

"“Saw really has this feeling that there are things at work, and if [the Rebels] don’t get active, there’ll be no stopping it,” Filoni says. “There’s only a thread of hope at that point.”"

Saw knows something is coming. He senses it on Geonosis, where the Empire wiped out the entire native population to keep it silent about the Death Star project. It must be maddening for him to know the rebels need to act, but won’t. They just aren’t organized or desperate enough to make war on the Empire. He probably branches off on his own so he can use his preferred tactic – terrorism – to start his own war.

The YouTube description for the promo reads, “See Saw Gerrera as a rebel before he became a rogue.” “Rogue” is obviously a play on words, a reference to Saw’s Rogue One appearance. But it could also be taken literally. Rebels could be where we see Saw display his first signs of madness. We may see how Saw turned into an extremist.
