Rogue One is the second highest grossing Star Wars film ever!
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story continues to dominate the worldwide box office, and yet, the film had a weak opening in China…
If you are like me, then you’ve seen Rogue One: A Star Wars Story in theaters on more than one occasion. Star Wars fans around the globe are making the very first Star Wars standalone film one of the most successful Star Wars films in the Lucasfilm library.
According to Movieweb, Rogue One is the second highest grossing Star Wars film ever, behind The Force Awakens, recently surpassing Episode I: The Phantom Menace. Rogue One has hit $477 million domestically, while The Phantom Menace sat at $431 million.
Additionally, Rogue One has hit a massive number in the worldwide box office, landing just shy of a billion at $914 million. In fact, many experts are predicting the film will surpass $1 billion before it hits the end of its theatrical run. However, all that worldwide success didn’t have any bearing on the film’s opening in China, which CNBC is calling “tepid.”
"Underscoring how perhaps The Force was not particularly strong with this country, “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” opened to a fairly tepid $31 million over three days at the Chinese box office this weekend."
The CNBC piece pointed to ComScore, which stated the $31 million was about 60 percent of what The Force Awakens grossed in its first two days, in China, last year. For now, Rogue One still holds onto the top spot, domestically, with Fox’s Hidden Figures beginning to challenge the Star Wars film’s hold on number 1, according to Box Office Mojo.
