A recent issue of Star Wars Insider revealed the origin of Rogue One’s lead character, Jyn Erso’s name. It’s actually pretty simple.

According to a recent issue of Star Wars Insider, it was John Knoll – the progenitor of the Rogue One story idea – who came up with the name “Jyn.”

Knoll didn’t just throw letters around until they produced a science fiction-sounding name. Rather, “Jyn” is an amalgamation of the names of some important women in his life.

"“My youngest daughter is Jane, and my wife is Jen, so [Jyn] is sort of mashup of them. And growing up my aunt was Aunt Ginny, [short] for Virginia, so there’s a little bit of that, too. It’s a mix up of a lot of my favorite women in my life.”"

I like that the names of Rogue One‘s main characters all sound real. Like thought was put into them. Some of them are a bit strange – like Chirrut Imwe, Baze Malbus, Krennic – but somehow, they fit their characters’ personalities.

It’s interesting how Star Wars names are a mixture of real-world and bizarre. For example, Luke, Leia, and Han are all names from Earth’s history. But Yoda, Jabba, and Lando? They may have roots somewhere in our history, but those roots are buried deep.
