Art and Information on Cancelled Darth Maul Game Revealed

Darth Maul has captured the hearts and minds of Star Wars fans across the globe since his first appearance in 1999’s The Phantom Menace, and recently, some new information has come to light on a canceled Darth Maul video game….

No matter how hard they try, they just can’t seem to get rid of Darth Maul…and that’s a good thing. Star Wars fan first thought the end of the angrily tattooed Zabrak from Dathomir had come when a young Obi-Wan Kenobi sliced the Sith Lord in half. That was not the end, however, as Maul was found to be living during The Clone Wars animated series.

Maul and his brother Savage Opress went on a reign of terror, during The Clone Wars, until Maul’s former master, Darth Sidious (Emperor Palpatine) traveled to Mandalore personally and dispatched them both. Savage was killed, while Sidious had other plans for Maul.

Maul appeared once again in the Dark Horse four issue comic run, Son of Dathomir, where he eventually — and once again — escaped his former master’s wrath. Maul’s next appearance in Star Wars canon was the animated series Star Wars Rebels, where he has continually attempted to take Ezra Bridger as his apprentice.

And finally, Marvel Star Wars has announced that it will run a Maul comic series in February of this year. Perhaps all of Maul’s recent resurgent popularity is the reason for this latest news, as concept art and information regarding the canceled Darth Maul has resurfaced.

Website Art Station ran the original piece, revealing the art and information on the game.

"Back in 2011, I was fortunate enough to work with Lucas Arts and Redfly Studios to help develop the look direction for a new Star Wars IP that centered around Darth Maul. It took place in a future timeline sometime after Return of the Jedi and was meant to have a darker, grittier tone. Unfortunately, the project was conceived around the same time as the Disney acquisition. it was canceled after 1 year of development. Definitely dream of getting the opportunity to work on another Star Wars related project, so much fun!"

The game, titled Battle of the Sith Lords, or Star Wars: Darth Maul (it all seems convoluted at this point) was in development for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, as well as rumors of it being available on Wii U. Players would start out with playing as a young Maul, and from there, the game’s the story would lead them directly before the events of Episode 1: The Phantom Menace.

The canceled Darth Maul game was set to be a much bloodier and darker approach to another wildly popular Star Wars third-person action game — The Force Unleashed.
