Rian Johnson’s Friend Records Hilarious Original Song For The Last Jedi
By Elaine Tveit
John Darnielle, friend of Star Wars: Episode VIII director Rian Johnson & a member of The Mountain Goats, recorded an original song for The Last Jedi.
John Darnielle of The Mountain Goats has some thoughts on the nature of “The Last Jedi” in Episode VIII‘s recently revealed title. He put his ideas into a song, which he titled, “The Ultimate Jedi Who Wastes All the Other Jedi and Eats Their Bones.”
Basically, he’s saying Luke Skywalker is a cannibal.
The song begins on a hopeful note with the singer encouraging a young person to uphold the goodness and justice of his/her Jedi predecessors. Things take a turn for the dark side, though, when the singer relates to the young person that the last Jedi Master (presumably Luke) is an ultimate Jedi who wastes all the other Jedi and feasts on their bones. And the Padawan is next on his menu.
Take a listen to the absolutely nonsensical hilarity below.
Jedi are known for losing their lives and limbs, so it makes sense, right?
This song reminds me of Weird Al Yankovich’s Star Wars parodies, like “The Saga Begins.” But “The Ultimate Jedi Who Wastes All the Other Jedi and Eats Their Bones” has more of a colloquial charm about it. I think it’s because it sounds so off-the-cuff, so unplanned, so utterly ridiculous.
The Mountain Goats are an Indie folk band based in California. Led by John Darnielle, the group has been active since 1991. And apparently, Darnielle is great friends with Rian Johnson and a big Star Wars fan. We’re glad because this song is a refreshing break from the speculation, rumors, and reports of the Star Wars fandom.
