The official Star Wars Databank updated Kylo Ren’s biography with hints at the connection between Kylo Ren and Rey, plus Kylo’s reaction to Han Solo’s death.

Kylo Ren is proving himself a complex character who may not be a lost cause after all.

The official Star Wars website recently updated its Databank entry on the master of the Knights of Ren. The hints the new portions of Kylo’s biography give regarding the Solo son’s inner conflicts are game-changing. Specifically, one new section alludes to a connection Kylo feels with Rey, who not only resisted his attempts to read her mind but also defeated him in a lightsaber battle.

"Snoke warned Kylo that there had been an awakening in the Force, and his apprentice would face a test when he confronted his father. Kylo swore his loyalties were only to Snoke. But he was intrigued when he captured Rey, a Jakku scavenger whose Force abilities were raw but very powerful. A mysterious connection seemed to link the two."

This “mysterious connection” between Kylo and Rey will delight Reylo shippers: those Star Wars fans who favor a romance between the wannabe Sith and the scavenger. But the connection could also be familial; the jury is still out if Rey is Luke Skywalker’s daughter, in which case she and Kylo are cousins.

“Family,” incidentally, is still a major player in Kylo’s inner struggle between the dark and the light. The fact is, murdering his father did not bring Kylo the closure he hoped for.

"Kylo faced his father inside the First Order’s Starkiller Base, and struck Han down with his lightsaber. But this shocking act of patricide didn’t make the former Ben Solo feel stronger – somehow he felt weaker. Rey then bested Kylo in a lightsaber duel, sparing his life. Kylo Ren had hoped to end the conflicts that caused him so such pain, but found he remained at war with himself, more lost than ever."

Some fans think Kylo is irredeemable after killing his own father. But Darth Vader committed far worse sins during his career as a Sith lord, yet even he returned to the side of light and good before he died. Perhaps the sequel trilogy will explore how a person like Kylo can redeem himself and go on to contribute to society afterward. It may even be that he and Rey switch places, with him returning to the light side and her succumbing to Snoke’s influence.

With so much complexity surrounding Kylo Ren’s character, there is no doubt we’re in for a powerful story arc in Episodes VIII and IX. The sequel trilogy may even turn out as the most poignant in the Skywalker saga.
