Actress Pheobe Waller-Bridge In Talks For Role In Star Wars: Han Solo

Actress Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Amazon’s Fleabag) is in talks for a CGI role in the upcoming Star Wars standalone movie about young Han Solo.

Actress Phoebe Waller-Bridge, best known for creating and starring in Amazon’s streaming series Fleabag, is reportedly in talks to star in the upcoming young Han Solo movie.

According to Variety, Lucasfilm is lining up Waller-Bridge to play a CGI character in the style of Lupita Nyong’o’s Maz Kanata in The Force Awakens and Alan Tudyk’s K-2SO in Rogue One. Like the latter in Rogue One, Waller-Bridge’s character would be ” a significant part of the ensemble.”

Waller-Bridge played minor roles in Academy Award-winning films Albert Nobbs (2011) and The Iron Lady (2011). She also played a minor character in BBC’s drama series Broadchurch. Today, she is best known for Fleabag, a Critics Choice Award-nominated six-part series released by Amazon Studios in 2016. Waller-Bridge both wrote the series and stars in it. Based on a comedy play, Fleabag follows “a young woman [Waller-Bridge’s character] trying to cope with life in London whilst coming to terms with a recent tragedy” (via IMDB).

Though clearly, Waller-Bridge’s acting expertise does not lie solely in comedy, her experience with humor may give us a clue as to the nature of her Star Wars character, should she accept the role in Han Solo.

Like K-2SO and Maz, her character could be snarky and humorous, a stand-in for comedy relief. I would enjoy seeing a female-styled droid with an attitude, to break up the monotony of sarcastic male-designated droids. But it would also be nice to see Waller-Bridge play a deeper character like Maz, who is just as wise as she is fun. I would also like to see more aliens in starring roles, which both Rogue One and The Force Awakens failed on delivering (aside from Maz Kanata).

The young Han Solo standalone movie currently stars Alden Ehrenreich, Donald Glover, Emilia Clarke, and Woody Harrelson. Its scheduled release date is May 25th, 2018.
