Rumor: Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail in talks to write Kenobi standalone movie
By Elaine Tveit
The oft-rumored Obi-Wan Kenobi standalone Star Wars film may be in the works with Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail as its writer.
In a new rumor reported by Omega Underground, Sam Esmail (creator and sometimes director of the Mr. Robot television series) has attended pitch meetings at Lucasfilm to write a standalone Star Wars film. According to Omega Underground’s sources, that standalone film is the pre- A New Hope Obi-Wan Kenobi story many fans are clamoring for (via /Film).
Esmail is the mastermind behind the Mr. Robot series about “a vigilante hacker” on the USA channel. The show, which began its first season in 2015, received a Golden Globe in 2016 for Best Television Series. In addition to Mr. Robot, Esmail wrote and directed the 2014 film Comet, a romantic comedy involving a parallel universe. He also penned the story for a 2014 horror flick called Mockingbird.

Esmail clearly is not short of experience with writing thought-provoking, imaginative stories. He also produces quality work as Mr. Robot‘s many award wins and Comet‘s Best Narrative Feature nomination at the Los Angeles Film Festival show. All that is needed is a passion for Star Wars; which I’m sure Esmail, like so many of us, has in abundance.
Esmail would be a good choice for the writer of a Kenobi film script. Such a script needs a lot of thinking outside the box to make it more than just two hours of Obi-Wan sitting in the desert communing with the Force. But a story about Kenobi on Tatooine also possesses a lot of potential as a medium for exploring new concepts and Force lore. That’s why Esmail is a great choice for a writing the script. He possesses the storytelling skills necessary to write a truly compelling Kenobi-in-exile tale.
Esmail would be a great choice for writing any Star Wars film. It’s important to keep that fact in mind, because even if Esmail is meeting with Lucasfilm, a Kenobi movie may not be on the table. Remember, these are rumors from inside sources and may or may not be accurate. But at least there is more reason to hope now that an Obi-Wan Kenobi movie is in the works and has an amazing writer behind it.
