Tuesday, Comic Books Resources exclusively revealed the release dates and storylines of IDW Publishing’s first two canon Star Wars comic issues directed at kids.

At Star Wars Celebration Orlando, during the Publishing Round Table panel, IDW Publishing announced their next project: Star Wars Adventures, a comic series written for kids. Tuesday afternoon,  Comic Book Resources exclusively revealed the release dates and storylines of the first two issues in that series.

On September 6, Star Wars fans can pick up issue #1, which will  “reveal Rey’s early adventures on Jakku as well as a comical tale of clone catastrophe!” Issue #2 debuts on September 20 and continues Rey’s tale. Both of these installments are written by Cavan Scott (Doctor Who comics) and illustrated by Derek Charm (Riverdale).

According to CBR, each issue of Star Wars Adventures contains two stories. Each of these stories can take place in any era of Star Wars canon, from the prequels to the sequels. That means lots of potential for some fun one-offs about both beloved heroes and villains as well as some of the more obscure background characters.

Producing a Star Wars comic book series for kids is a great idea. The Marvel Star Wars comics are fantastic, but some of them contain adult themes. For example, if I were a parent, I probably wouldn’t let my kid read Darth Vader as that series contains a lot of violence and death. A Darth Vader story under the Star Wars Adventures banner, however, would be tame yet still entertaining.

Purchase Rey’s Star Wars Adventures stories on September 6 and September 20. Preview the covers for these first two issues of the comic at CBR.
