Review – ‘BB-8 on the Run’ is the perfect Star Wars bedtime story

‘BB-8 on the Run,’ Disney-Lucasfilm Press’s first canon Star Wars picture book, is the perfect bedtime story for younglings and masters alike.

Like many people of varying ages, I love BB-8. And, even though I’m 21 years old and don’t have kids yet, I also like reading children’s picture books. BB-8 on the Run, written by Drew Daywalt and illustrated by Matt Myers, brings the best of both of those worlds — the beloved The Force Awakens original character and children’s stories — together. The result is the perfect bedtime story that both younglings and adults can enjoy.

Below is the synopsis of the picture book, which releases in stores on September 1 (Force Friday II; via Disney):

"When BB-8 is separated from his master, Poe Dameron, on the lonely desert planet of Jakku, he has no choice but to keep rolling. It’s all up to him to get a top-secret map back to the Resistance so they can find Luke Skywalker and save the galaxy from the evil First Order. It’s scary to have a big job when you’re just a little droid on your own. But BB-8 isn’t alone for long. As he speeds across the sand, BB-8 meets all kinds of strangers who need his help. Should he do good things, as Poe always told him, or will that get in the way of his mission?"

Honestly, I didn’t think BB-8 could get any more lovable until I read and advanced copy of this book, which was generously provided to me by Disney. But Daywalt and Myers made the seemingly impossible happen. Daywalt’s story is a cute story about performing acts of kindness for others, even if you don’t expect to get anything out of it. Meanwhile, Myers’s illustrations are colorful and detailed, but not too childlike; a perfect blend of whimsy and photorealism. I haven’t tested this book on my niece and nephew (aged 4 and 2, respectively) yet, but I feel confident they will enjoy the drawings as well as the simple, sweet storyline.

I really cannot recommend you to purchase BB-8 on the Run either for yourself or for the younglings in your life, when it releases in stores on September 1.
