D.J is a character not to trust when The Last Jedi rolls around…

Leave it to our friends at Entertainment Weekly to give us more details on characters from Star WarsThe Last Jedi, this time with the mysterious D.J. played by Oscar winning actor Benicio Del Toro. EW’s Star Wars correspondent Anthony Breznican confirms what we know so far about the mysterious D.J.

Breznican reveals that D.J. is a Slicer, the Star Wars equivalent to a modern day hacker.

"Del Toro plays a man who goes by the name “DJ.” And his shabby appearance suggests someone familiar with the underbelly of the galaxy."

D.J. is a mysterious character indeed. Lucasfilm did reveal a little about the character in a one line statement:

"DJ is an enigmatic figure whose tattered, threadbare clothes and lackadaisical attitude conceal a sharp mind and expert skills."

Thanks, Lucasfilm! Speculation ran wild with a wide variety of fan theories ranging from D.J. being Ezra from Star Wars Rebels, some sort of surviving Sith, or an acolyte of Supreme Leader Snoke.

According to Breznican, D.J. seems to be something entirely different than what fans were expecting and will be teaming up with Finn and Rose of the Resistance

"We also know that DJ is part of the mission that John Boyega’s Finn and Kelly Marie Tran’s Rose undertake to the wealthy, gambling resort city of Canto Bright. But … do they bring him there? Do they capture him there? Do they free him there?"

D.J seems to be the ultimate wildcard, a character very similar to Ransolm Casterfo in the canon novel, Bloodlines by Claudia Gray. Casterfo was a character who worked with Leia on some undercover missions, where his loyalties changed from moment to moment.  One minute he was someone you could count on with your life, and other times, you couldn’t.

D.J. provides a set of specific skills that Finn and Rose apparently are in need of, Boyega reveals.

More from Dork Side of the Force

"We just need a codebreaker and he’s the best in the galaxy. Unfortunately, he’s very dodgy and only in it for financial gain. He doesn’t fight for any side."

Del Toro always kept the crew guessing on set, according to Tran, who was impressed by what he had to offer in bringing the character to life.

"When I was onset with that character, I felt like there was a tiger in the room, and I always had to be watching,. Like an animal, at any moment he could do something, and I didn’t know what."

Will D.J. be a friend or foe to the Resistance? Why is Lucasfilm keeping his role in Star Wars: The Last Jedi such a mystery? Is D.J. Snoke? (we’re totally kidding).

What we’re not kidding about, however, is that we will find out in just four months when The Last Jedi drops in theaters on December 15.
