An Obi-Wan Star Wars film is now in the works!

It appears as if the long-awaited Obi-Wan Star Wars film is going to happen…

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Obi-Wan Kenobi Star Wars standalone film is in the works with Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Stephen Daldry directing the project. Daldry, among many other things, is known for his work with The Hours, and by recently directing episodes of Netflix’s The Crown.

THR notes it is not known as yet if Ewan McGregor will reprise his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi for the film that has no script and is still in the early stages of development. In fact, Lucasfilm is also apparently looking at a Boba Fett standalone, and of all things, a Yoda standalone Star Wars film.

With Han Solo making the second of three standalone films Disney announced way back in 2015, fans have been wondering when they would get an official announcement of the third. And, regardless of which film Disney/Lucasfilm lands on, the clock is ticking on a start date once Han Solo hits theaters next May (2018).

Of course, Ewan McGregor is the odds on favorite of Star Wars fans to play the Jedi Master if this film were to be greenlit. McGregor did such a phenomenal job with Obi-Wan during the prequel trilogy, that in order to show the character’s progression from the Jedi Knight to wizened Jedi Master awaiting Luke Skywalker’s coming of age on Tattooine, he’d have to be the actor for that role.

As Entertainment Weekly points out, the reason Kenobi has yet to be the focus of his own Star Wars standalone film is his connection to the sequel trilogy is not yet finished. This might explain no official announcement of the third standalone film until after Episode IX. Interpret that how you will, Rey theorists.
