Kanan Jarrus abandons the rugged look in Star Wars Rebels and finally gets a haircut, which Hera Syndulla apparently can do without.

The love story of Kanan Jarrus and Hera Syndulla in Star Wars Rebels has been a subtle one, until now — where the two cannot hide their love for one another any longer. Hera inspired Kanan to stop running from his past and embrace the man he indeed is — one of love, compassion, selflessness, and leadership. War brought them together and is now doing it’s best to tear them apart.

In the previous Star Wars Rebels episode, Hera’s captured at the command of Grand Admiral Thrawn, by his bodyguard guard, Rukh, and now Kanan is desperate to get her back. It’s not wise to upset a… Jedi.

However, Kanan knows his judgment’s clouded, so he tasks his apprentice Ezra Bridger to lead the campaign instead. Before they depart on their journey, Kanan cleans himself up a bit — ditching the Jedi Temple guard mask, shaving off the beard, and finally getting a haircut. We learn from the latest Rebels trailer that Hera liked the rugged Kanan better, and who can blame her.

Disney XD released a teaser clip, showing Kanan’s brand-new look.

"Let’s go get Hera."

Kanan’s sported this look before, many moons ago, before the dreaded Order 66 changed his life forever — with his Master dying to save him and the Jedi Order nearly extinct as a result, when he went by the name of Caleb Dume.

However, there’s more than meets the eye with Kanan’s new hairstyle, one likely inspired by Samurai culture. It’s possible that Dave Filoni and his Lucasfilm crew drew inspiration from this very code of conduct:

"More from Dork Side of the ForceDaniel José Older named a High Republic Adventures character after someone specialHow animation changed Star Wars: Ewoks and DroidsKelleran Beq comes to Star Wars: Galaxy of HeroesThe Mandalorian’s Pedro Pascal becomes No. 1 on IMDb’s Starmeter for 2023Unwrapping the Star Wars LEGO Advent Calendar: Day 7Male samurai wore their hair in a famous “top knot” style that became emblematic of their status in society. If a samurai was to abandon his societal role, either to join the priesthood or to choose life as a peasant, such a man would cut off his top knot and undergo a dramatic decline in social status."

That sounds an awful lot like what Kanan is embracing, his role in the priesthood, or a Jedi in this case. He’s finally returning to his true identity as a Jedi — like he did nearly two decades before as a Jedi Padawan. Caleb Dume is back and better than ever. However, certain doom awaits the inspired Jedi Knight, but we don’t want to think about that right now.

All Dume has on his mind is getting the love of his life, Hera, back home safe and sound. Talk about making the rest of us guys look terrible on Valentine’s Day, huh? Kanan is giving his love the ultimate V-Day gift, rescuing his damsel in distress.
