Oscar Isaac is returning to the science fiction genre in the latest adaptation of the hit novel “Dune”.

The actor who portrayed Poe Dameron in the Star Wars sequel trilogy will play Duke Leto, the father of protagonist Paul Atreides in the upcoming film. Dune is based on the novel of the same name by Frank Herbert. Many have tried but none have succeeded in adapting the novel successfully as a film.

This is not Oscar Isaac’s first role in science fiction since Star Wars. In 2018, he played a supporting role in Annihilation alongside another familiar face in the Star Wars universe; Natalie Portman. In the film, Isaac play’s Portman’s husband Kane, who goes missing under mysterious circumstances

The film is set to be released later this year in December. It is still unclear whether the release date will change due to the recent outbreak of COVID-19.

The novel, Dune is often given credit for inspiring many fantasy and science fictional stories, including Star Wars among others. Its desert setting can be easily compared to the outer-rim planet of Tatoine in the Star Wars universe. The story is complicated and focused on world-building as an essential part of its plot. This is one reason why the newest adaptation will not be one film, but instead split into two parts.

Vanity Fair featured a first look from the set of Dune, like in the way it has featured Star Wars over the years.

Isaac has long been in the spotlight, even before the premiere of Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens in 2015. His most famous works before then include films such as Ex Machina and Inside Llewyn Davis, the latter have which garnered him a Golden Globe nomination.

Dune features an all-star cast. Along with Oscar Isaac, the film is set to include other acclaimed actors like Timothee Chalamet, Jason Momoa and Zendaya among others.
