Oscar Isaac doesn’t see more Star Wars in his future

It seems like there could be more story to be told for Poe Dameron’s character from the Star Wars sequel trilogy. We are getting a book soon about his younger years, but we’re talking at post-The Rise of Skywalker.

So what are the chances Oscar Isaac would return to his role as Poe Dameron?

More from Star Wars Actors

Eh, probably not too high.

Deadline interviewed Isaac for his new movie The Card Counter, which is the type of movie Isaac wants to focus on for a little while. The big blockbuster isn’t where his mind is right now, but instead more with artistic films.

Isaac told Deadline:

"It’s not really what I set out to do. What I set out to do was to make handmade movies, and to work with people that inspire me,” Isaac said. Paul (Schrader)’s movies, the things that he’s made, it’s in my DNA. I’m not alone, obviously. Every actor of a certain generation, those are the films that made them who they are, so that’s certainly my case. It feels like for me a personal turning point and that, as far as I’m concerned, it has nothing to do with the finished product. It’s the process of doing this.”"

When specifically asked if that meant Isaac wouldn’t return to Star Wars, he said:

"“Probably, but who knows. If I need another house or something.”"

Obviously, it was meant as a joke, but I think it’s important to realize where people are in their careers. Star Wars is a phenomenal thing to be a part of. It changes lives. While Isaac has gained more notoriety, it also has allowed him the chance to do projects that fulfill him more on a personal or emotional level.

If that means saying good bye to Star Wars, so be it. Poe Dameron’s character was a fan favorite and one that many will enjoy for decades to come.

It also gave Isaac a monetary cushion to seek things that will give him greater satisfaction in professional life and we can’t really begrudge that. Many people would jump at a chance like that.

Having said all that, I think we all know that it’s important to leave doors open as we got a chance to see the original trilogy characters back again. You just never know when the right opportunity will come about and when that “maybe” or “no” just might turn into a yes.
