Temuera Morrison responds to Boba Fett spinoff rumors
By Mia Johnson
Actor Temuera Morrison has addressed those Boba Fett spinoff rumors.
There was a huge payoff in episode 6 of The Mandalorian season 2. In this episode, titled “Chapter 14: The Tragedy,” fans saw the return of Boba Fett — this time played by Episode II Jango Fett actor Temuera Morrison.
Just like with the casting of Rosario Dawson as Ahsoka Tano, the cat was well out of the bag before Disney/Lucasfilm could officially announce it. (Then again, Disney has been trying to wait until the day of to make these things official, but that hasn’t really worked out… possibly aside from the Fennec reveal.) But now that Boba Fett is officially back, it’s starting to feel like a few episodes in The Mandalorian just isn’t enough.
Luckily, there have also been rumors of a Boba Fett series coming, with reports even saying that filming is quickly underway. But what did the new Boba Fett star have to say about those rumors? In an interview with The New York Times published today, Morrison revealed what he could about any future involvement when asked about it. Of course, he gave the most Disney-approved answer he could. But at least we do have an official statement from him. Here’s what he had to say:
"I’m just going to have to wait and see. I think a lot of it depends on how things go with this season, but I don’t really know. I wanted to bring everything I had to that [episode] and give them a glimmer of what I can offer. There’s room for this to go someplace. I hope I’m going to be included."
Yep, the answer for right now may be a bit disappointing. But it really goes to show that Disney and Star Wars do not like their secrets to be all out on the table. Professionally, of course, it’s best to make sure that the actors or anyone involved don’t reveal anything before it’s officially announced. But when it comes to the more credible sources in trade publications (like the Deadline scoop on the Boba Fett spinoff filming), they always seem to be one step ahead of Disney in that regard.
Morrison also revealed what it was like getting that call to be a part of The Mandalorian. It seems like the process is a bit streamlined as he gave the same answer that both Katee Sackhoff (Bo-Katan) and Rosario Dawson did when they revealed how they were cast. It starts with a phone call, Jon Favreau invites you to see some of the concept sketches that they have. And then you leave absolutely excited, pinching yourself and wondering if this is actually happening.
He did make quite a funny joke, though, when it came to his casting as he wondered if Star Wars would ever reach out to him — considering he heard about the Mandalorian project they were working on. He said:
"My agent and I had a number of discussions — when are they going to call me? But then I kept forgetting about it. In this day and age, they have a number of options. They could have called other people to play the part. They can go with a fresh face. They could have called the Rock. I felt so grateful that after all this time, something came to be."
Let’s just be thankful that Favreau did go with Temuera Morrison over the Rock. We can only imagine Dwayne Johnson would be absolutely busting through the old Boba Fett armor, indicating that Boba was really dedicated to his HIIT routine after surviving the Sarlacc pit. But bringing Morrison back into the Star Wars family was an excellent touch, and we hope to see more of him soon!
Would you like to see Temuera Morrison star in his own Boba Fett spinoff? What would it be about? Let us know in the comments!
