Star Wars is the franchise that never sleeps, and 2021 is going to be another lively one.
In no way did the end of the Skywalker saga in 2019 mean the end of Star Wars as we know it. While there was some word that Star Wars would be on a break of sorts following the end of Episode IX, so far, it only extended to the movie side of things — and thus every other aspect of Star Wars would be in full swing in the movies’ absence.
2020 already proved to be a major year for Star Wars. There were the finales of Star Wars: Resistance and Star Wars: The Clone Wars. The Mandalorian season 2 aired. And Lucasfilm announced a slew of new projects in the works for years to come. So as we get ready to go into the new year, you should expect business to be booming on the Star Wars front.
There won’t be any new movies in 2021, but there’s a lot in store for television. In TV, 2021 will bring the return of more adventures of Mando and Grogu with season 3 of The Mandalorian dropping late in 2021. Around the same time, there will also be the new spinoff series The Book of Boba Fett streaming on Disney+. And The Clone Wars spinoff The Bad Batch will also be coming to Disney+ beginning Feb. 21, 2021.
On top of that, the Kenobi series is set to begin filming early in the year around springtime, so (for those people who like leaks) we may begin to get more information about the show in the coming months.
Surprisingly, one of the next biggest projects for Star Wars in 2021 will be all literary. Beginning in January, Star Wars will launch The High Republic series. Told throughout a combination of novels and comic books, these stories will take place 200 years well in the past — before the events of The Phantom Menace — and will tell the tale of the Jedi Order when the galaxy was experiencing its most golden years. That series kicks off with Charles Soules’ Light of the Jedi, which will be out on Jan. 5, 2021.
Additionally, a little more secretive than all the other plans, Lucasfilm will be celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2021. Of course, Lucasfilm is comprised of more than just Star Wars, but we can expect a significant amount of special content on the Star Wars front from Lucasfilm, including new merch to celebrate this rare occasion.
Needless to say, even in the absence of movies, a lot will be going down in 2021 for Star Wars. And we’re sure even with all that’s planned, there will still be more surprises in store for the new year.
