Why was Axe Woves missing in The Mandalorian season 2 finale?

It’s been some time since the season 2 finale of The Mandalorian dropped on Disney+. And some of us have been reflecting on the series as a whole, as well as some of the remaining questions we still have about the series after the finale. Most of our curiosity lies with the fate of Grogu and Din Djarin. What happens next? Will they ever see each other again? Will the show ever be the same?

But there’s another question some fans may have had about the season 2 finale that was never addressed anywhere in that episode: What happened to Axe Woves? If you recall from The Mandalorian “Chapter 11: The Heiress,” we met Bo-Katan Kryze and her other Mandalorian allies, Koska Reeves and Axe Woves. Bo-Katan and Axe Woves were to help with the Grogu rescue mission in the season finale. But Axe was nowhere to be found.

The episode just glazed over this so casually that one wouldn’t be wrong to wonder, “Did they just forget about Axe Woves? Is he not that important?”

Fortunately for Axe, it doesn’t seem like the end of the line for him just yet. And in fact, Bo-Katan actress Katee Sackhoff had something to say about that when it came to Axe’s future. When asked about it on The Sith Council podcast on YouTube, she had something fairly vague yet telling to say when asked why he wasn’t there.

“He just wasn’t there! He just wasn’t there,” she said to the podcast host. “And there’s a reason. It’s just one of those things where I don’t know if that story is something I’m supposed to tell. So he’s just not there.”

Will Axe Woves return to The Mandalorian?

There’s a lot to unpack from Sackhoff’s answer, even if it’s brief and doesn’t seem to say much. But it speaks volumes. From the looks of it, Axe Woves does have a future in Star Wars, and her inability to say anything right now makes it all the more fascinating to see what role he will play down the line.

Right now, very little is known about Axe as a character outside of what we’ve seen him do in The Mandalorian. We know he’s a Mandalorian. We know he rolls deep with Bo-Katan and Koska, and that’s about it. But the trajectory of The Mandalorian series itself could lend us some hints about what’s to come.

More from The Mandalorian

First, we know that Bo-Katan is in big trouble when it comes to the Mandalorian heirloom, the Darksaber. Those who wield the Darksaber are the rightful leader Mandalore, and it must be won in battle. By unknowingly “winning” the Darksaber from Moff Gideon, that put Din Djarin in the position of the leader, something Bo-Katan wasn’t planning on.

Now, she’s left to decide how she will proceed with wanting to gain the heirloom back, and it isn’t an easy decision to make, especially considering she wants to reclaim Mandalore — an even harder job to do.

This is one way that Axe can come back into the narrative. Perhaps he’s been doing some work in the background in order to help reclaim Mandalore, and his work will be very important in reclaiming the planet. Again, we don’t know much about Axe and his own backstory, so that means anything is possible.

Depending on the story, there’s also the possibility that he can appear in other shows as well, such as the Ahsoka series or Rangers of the New Republic. But so far, The Mandalorian sounds like the best bet, simply because of this loose end that the series left heading into season 3. No matter what, it’s good to know that Star Wars may have something more for this character in the future. And we’ll be excited to see what he can do once this character is fleshed out more.
