In Star Wars, we’re trained to expect the unexpected. But there was nothing more unexpected for almost all fans than when Luke Skywalker appeared during the final scene of The Mandalorian season 2.

Sure, Luke Skywalker was certainly a possibility when it came to Jedi who could train Grogu. But it was still a shock to see him appear out of the elevator and slice his way through all the bad guys to save the little Padawan.

Speaking about the scene, Mark Hamill appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Thursday night. The actor talked a little bit about what it was like returning to Star Wars for that epic moment and what it meant to him. He told Fallon in the interview:

"Talk about unexpected. I had finished playing that part. I never expected to do it again. I thought if they ever tell stories of Luke in that period post the originals and pre-sequels, they would get an age-appropriate actor. So when Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni told me about what they wanted to do, I was just stunned."

He also joked in the interview that with The Mandalorian, he was sworn to secrecy, that he couldn’t talk about it with his family, and he can barely talk about it now. (Is he perhaps hinting that there’s more Luke Skywalker in store for The Mandalorian season 3?)

What he could talk about was the upcoming Disney Gallery: Star Wars: The Mandalorian special. This special arrives on the platform on Aug. 25, and it will go behind the scenes of the making of the season 2 finale.

We’ll probably get to hear Hamill talk more openly about the making of the season 2 closer. Though, that won’t necessarily mean he’ll get to talk about the future of Luke Skywalker in Star Wars. There’s a high probability that he could be part of The Mandalorian season 3 cast as well. But we’ve heard from the horse’s mouth that Star Wars is all about secrecy. So we likely won’t know more about his involvement in the series until a trailer comes out or when the season premieres.
