Summertime is wrapping up. And despite the season winding down, by no means does that mean Disney+ is winding down. In fact, Disney’s CEO is promising that on the platform’s second anniversary, they’ll have a huge, new showcase of soon-to-come Disney+ content. But before we get to that in November, there will be a couple of fun things to watch this September.

Unlike previous months, there won’t be a Disney+ Premier Access movie to look forward to. Movies like Jungle Cruise and Black Widow have all premiered using this premium service on the streaming platform the same day they open in theaters. But now, Disney is testing the waters with theater-only releases again, so no big movies will premiere on Disney+ over the next month.

Still, there will be plenty to look forward to, and we have five highlights for what to watch this September.

Disney+ September 2021

1. Star Wars: Visions

A new type of Star Wars series, Visions will be the first anime series to come from Star Wars. All nine stories will be released on Sept. 22. And unlike serial TV shows like The Bad Batch or The Mandalorian, this series is an anthology — meaning these will be standalone, non-canon tales for each episode. If you find that interesting, there will also be behind-the-scenes featurettes called Star Wars: Visions (Filmmaker Focus) released on the same day.

2. Marvel Studios Legends — “The Ten Rings”

On Sept. 3, Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will premiere in theaters. It won’t premiere on Disney+, but the series Marvel Studios Legends will release an episode to prepare you for the film. Out on Sept. 1, this will likely be a short featurette, no more than 10 minutes, which will highlight the history of the Ten Rings in the MCU thus far.

3. What If…?

Another Marvel Studios project, What If…? continues into September with more episodes. It is a fascinating animated series that imagines the MCU’s greatest characters in scenarios completely unlike we’ve seen in the movies. And for more, you can read our review here and our interview with the creators here.

4. Monsters at Work

If you’re a fan of Pixar, and especially Monsters Inc., then you’ll want to watch this spinoff of the beloved animated movie. With all episodes out as of Sept. 1, the series follows a new hire at Monsters Inc. who has to learn his way around the new laugh-energy rules at the company. The show even recently threw in a Star Wars reference for good measure, so you know it’s a good one!

5. Dark Phoenix

Fox’s X-Men saga comes to a near close with this 2019 film, Dark Phoenix. Like its successor, The New Mutants, this X-Men film starring Sophie Turner suffered terrible delays, all to open to mixed reviews when the film finally premiered. If you haven’t caught it in theaters, then you can finally catch it on Disney+. Then, you can see for yourself if Fox closed out its X-Men saga with a hit or a miss.
