We’re closing in on the end of 2021. The holidays are swiftly approaching. Disney+ even has a Star Wars Halloween special streaming called LEGO Star Wars Terrifying Tales, which puts viewers on an adventure with Poe Dameron and BB-8 in Darth Vader’s castle.
However, casual fans of the franchise are probably wondering what this year’s Christmas drop will be. Big Star Wars projects and the most wonderful time of the year tend to coincide as if Lucasfilm is providing a present for one and all to enjoy during the holidays.
When it comes to movies, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron is at the top of fans’ minds. It’s the first film in the franchise slated for release since the Skywalker saga concluded. We’ll be stepping away from Jedi and lightsabers to embrace the mission and culture of starfighter pilots.
To be honest, Rogue Squadron is an opportunity to breathe new life into the film arm of the franchise that’s been weighed down by repeated explorations of the Skywalker family’s continuous upending of the galaxy’s peace.
While the characters in the trio of trilogies are well-beloved, it’s time to let them rest. At least on TV, the Obi-Wan Kenobi limited series is an addition to this saga we and everyone else are excited about.
But can we expect Star Wars: Rogue Squadron to come screaming into theaters this Christmas? Here’s what we know!
Star Wars: Rogue Squadron release date
The big Christmas drop this year isn’t Rogue Squadron. In fact, it’s not a Star Wars movie that’s premiering in December at all. It’s a series, a spin-off to be exact. The highly anticipated Disney+ original series The Book of Boba Fett debuts Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2021, which means we’re getting our Christmas present late this year.
This may have to do with Sony’s Spider-Man: No Way Home premiering Friday, Dec. 17. While that film isn’t coming to Disney+ and is being released in theaters, even a Star Wars project isn’t looking to compete for media coverage and audience attention with a Marvel movie, especially when Disney has its own investment in the film given the MCU.
But if Star Wars: Rogue Squadron isn’t our Star Wars gift for Christmas, then when will it be? Unfortunately, we have a two-year wait. The film, helmed by Patty Jenkins, won’t hit theaters until Friday, Dec. 22, 2023.
We’ll keep you posted on more Rogue Squadron news as it comes in. Stay tuned to Dork Side of the Force!
