The surprise announcement of Star Wars Jedi: Battle Scars excited fans of Jedi: Fallen Order and Star Wars book lovers alike. Written by Sam Maggs, author of numerous books and comics and writer of multiple video games, the book will take place between the events of Fallen Order and the upcoming sequel Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.

While Maggs has many previous writing credits, this is not the first Star Wars story the author has crafted in the Expanded Universe.

Maggs first contributed comic stories for the Star Wars Adventures (2020) series in 2020 and 2021. The author was also working as a writer for the Knights of the Old Republic (Remake) video game before moving on to other projects.

And most recently, Maggs contributed a short story to the middle-grade anthology Star Wars: Stories of Jedi and Sith. The story, “Luke on the Bright Side,” features Luke Skywalker interacting with a fellow member of the Rebellion on Hoth.

It’s becoming more common for Star Wars authors to start out contributing short stories to the universe before they’re given the opportunity to write a full-length novel. Most recently, Kiersten White published Star Wars: Padawan, but first contributed a short story to the 2020 From a Certain Pont of View: The Empire Strikes Back anthology. The same short story collection was Mike Chen’s first Star Wars story as well. He published Star Wars: Brotherhood in May 2022.

Maggs is the perfect person to write a Star Wars novel featuring fan-favorite Star Wars characters, and fans of the author’s work are thrilled to welcome a sort of new face into the “Del Rey let me write a whole Star Wars book” club.

Star Wars Jedi: Battle Scars by Sam Maggs will release on March 7, 2023, and The Art of Star Wars Jedi: SSurvivor arrives May 2, 2023.
