The Mandalorian S3E11 ending explained: ‘Chapter 17: The Apostate’
Warning! Spoilers ahead for The Mandalorian season three, episode one, “Chapter 17: The Apostate.”
The Mandalorian season two left off with Grogu’s departure to train in the ways of the force with Luke Skywalker. When we last saw the characters appear in The Book of Boba Fett, they had reunited with Grogu deciding to return to Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal).
Season three of The Mandalorian picks up some time after these events and begins a new journey in Mandalore. Let’s dive into the ending of “Chapter 17: The Apostate” and what lies ahead for Mando and Grogu.
The Search for Mandalore
The action-packed season three premiere of The Mandalorian saw Din with a fairly straightforward mission–to bathe in the waters of Mandalore in order to redeem himself with the Watch after removing his helmet to save Grogu.
While there were many twists and turns within this journey, including the potential return of IG-11, the episode’s final moments saw Din visiting a desolate Bo-Katan (Katee Sackhoff). We learned that without the Darksaber, she had been unable to retake Mandalore and her forces had abandoned her.
Though Din remained focused on his mission, it’s clear his issues with Bo-Katan are unresolved. Whether she will end up directly challenging him for the Darksaber or if they will find a way to lead Mandalore together remains to be seen.
On a larger level, this episode seems to foreshadow a larger arc for this season that Mando’s devotion to his Mandalorian upbringing will be tested, whether because his redemption will be impossible or unaccepted.
Either way, it’s safe to say this is the beginning of a new journey for Mando, Grogu, and the rest of the Mandalorian’s friends and foes.
