As the Star Wars franchise looks to turn a new page after the success of Andor, it may be considering what other stories it can tell within the series. One standout that it may want to consider is Mon Mothma. The character has been ever so popular in part due to her expanded story on Andor. The question is, could she get her own series as a result of the show's success?
One option would be to continue the character's journey from the events that ended Andor to her appearance in Return of the Jedi. An inside look at the inner workings of the Rebellion from outside of Princess Leia may be an open choice for Lucasfilm. Also, in Return of the Jedi, the character speaks of how the Bothan race was able to secure the plans for the second Death Star. It would be an interesting show or film to see how they came about those plans and add to the legacy of both Andor and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
Genevieve O'Reilly has played the character for nearly two decades and voiced the role on Star Wars Rebels. She may be open to a return, especially with Season 2 of Ahsoka now filming. She appeared in Season 1 as the Chancellor of the New Republic.
Another option would be to show Mon's struggles in either the Clone Wars era or her upbringing as an option. The Mask of Fear by Alexander Freed touched on her turbulent marriage to Perrin Fertha and early days in the Imperial Senate. Star Wars has always built upon nostalgia and showing how she came to her views, which would lead to her becoming a leader for the Rebellion, would be very interesting to explore.
If they went that path, they would have to nail the casting of the character, and in my opinion, Lucasfilm would be well advised to consult with O'Reilly if they did this. She has brought such strength and range to the character, only seen in Return of the Jedi for a few minutes.
There are many options on how to do a Mon Mothma series. I would not be surprised if the character does not receive her own show, if O'Reilly reprises the role in either the next season of Ahsoka, or appears in the upcoming film The Mandalorian and Grogu.
The character has been seen throughout the franchise. She, in a way, has been a stable part of each era of the story. And in my opinion, fans everywhere would rejoice in seeing her story continue.
