Mando movie: Is it a wrap? Dave Filoni hints principal photography is complete
Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau were in the house for Skeleton Crew's premiere in Los Angeles on December 3.
The duo has a lot to look forward to in the coming years, as both are responsible for several upcoming Star Wars projects, not the least of which is The Mandalorian and Grogu. The Mandalorian and Grogu kicks things off for Star Wars on the big screen for the first time since The Rise Of Skywalker was released in 2019.
According to Filoni's interview with ExtraTV at the premiere, filming on the highly anticipated project may have wrapped. The Extra reporter didn't ask Filoni if the movie had finished filming but suggested it did, to which Filoni responded with a simple "Yeah."
Again, Filoni didn't go into details regarding when it wrapped, if it did, although it's safe to assume they're pretty close to the finish line. Filming on the movie started sometime in late June or early July, which means it's been nearly 6 months.
When asked to give a tease about what to expect from the movie, Filoni said he couldn't reveal anything: "Nothing, nothing, of course, but I'm very excited about it as well. Jon and I had a great time working on that, as we always do. It was great seeing Grogu. He's become such a star." Filoni detailed what a joy it's been to see how much more can be done with Grogu compared to Season 1 of The Mandalorian because the puppeteering has come a long way since then. He added that he's worked quite closely with Legacy Effects on the puppetry aspect of the movie.
The Mandalorian and Grogu marks the return of Din Djarin and Grogu for the first time since The Mandalorian Season 3 concluded in April 2023. Fans are anxious for the duo to return, and some have their fingers crossed for any possible cameos by the duo in Skeleton Crew, which takes place in the same timeline. Din Djarin will work as a contractor and catch Imperial Remnants on a case-by-case basis for the New Republic after he struck a deal with Carson Teva for the same in the Season 3 finale. Pedro Pascal and Sigourney Weaver are the only confirmed cast members so far.
As expected, Filoni didn't divulge any plot details for the movie, but all credit goes to Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni for protecting it from potential leaks. By all accounts, everything is completely on schedule, and the production hasn't experienced any delays. This is a good sign for Star Wars and guarantees the movie is on track for a 2026 release.
Hopefully, we'll get our first official teaser of Din and Grogu's big screen adventures in the new year.
The Mandalorian and Grogu premieres in theaters on May 22, 2026.
