The Mandalorian and Grogu arrives in theaters in less than a year, and without an official trailer, fans have little information on the movie's plot. Recently, Mando's body double, Brendan Wayne, revealed what he believes fans can expect from the film.
Wayne says, “I think we go to the storytelling originally that we loved with The Mandalorian. We’re with the kid and Mando quite a bit, and their journey is forefront.”
This description aligns with what most fans predicted based on the finale of The Mandalorian Season 3. When the season ended, Din Djarin and Grogu were shown departing from Mandalore and settling down in a new home on Nevarro. At the time, some thought this might be the end, but it was the end of only one chapter of the duo's lives. With Grogu officially adopted by his Mandalorian father, they've officially become a family.
Before the show's finale, Din and Grogu were seen as father and son by everyone, but by making things official, the 'Clan of Two' can start on a brand new journey together. The season 3 finale was a well-deserved break for them before the start of another adventure. Recent rumors suggest that Disney is ready to greenlight a Mandalorian trilogy should next year's film prove to be a hit. In that case, it makes perfect sense for the film to utilize the show's successful formula.
Season 1 of The Mandalorian focused on Din Djarin and Grogu perhaps more than any other season. Season 2, while just as riveting, expands the story to include cameos by Bo-Katan Kryze, Ahsoka Tano, Boba Fett, Fennec Shand, and Luke Skywalker. If you're a fan of the show's original aesthetic, the upcoming film should give you exactly what you want, with a focus on Din Djarin and Grogu's beautiful relationship.
The focus on Din and Grogu will be enhanced by the IMAX experience, as confirmed by Jon Favreau during Star Wars Celebration in Japan. Favreau confirmed that The Mandalorian and Grogu was filmed for IMAX, with space scenes designed for IMAX screens, taller sets, and a full-scale AT-AT walker. Favreau admitted that he had always wished to give fans a grander visual experience, but the constraints of making a television series prevented him from doing so.
With a larger budget and more time to complete post-production, The Mandalorian and Grogu can deliver everything that made the show a massive success while catering to a grander vision. After Disney pushed back Avengers: Doomsday to December 2026 from its original May 2026 release date, next May belongs to Star Wars, as it rightfully should.
We're keeping our fingers crossed for the first official trailer of The Mandalorian and Grogu to release next month during D23 in Orlando, Florida.
The Mandalorian and Grogu premieres May 22, 2026.
