RUMOR: Star Wars could greenlight a trilogy of Mandalorian movies on one condition

A new, unconfirmed rumor suggests The Mandalorian and Grogu could be part one of the next Star Wars trilogy, but there's a catch.

A lot is riding on Star Wars' return to theaters next year with The Mandalorian and Grogu, including the future of Jon Favreau's beloved characters. Now, a new rumor suggests Lucasfilm has a long-term plan for The Mandalorian on the big screen.

Via The Direct, a new rumor from insider Daniel Richtman suggests Lucasfilm is ready to make The Mandalorian and Grogu the first part of a trilogy of Mandalorian movies. According to Richtman, "Lucasfilm reportedly plans to make 'THE MANDALORIAN & GROGU' the first installment in a potential trilogy. It depends on how well the film does."

If true, this is big news for Star Wars, as not only will The Mandalorian and Grogu mark Star Wars' return to theaters for the first time since 2019, but it could also be the first part of its next trilogy. While there are more Star Wars movies in the works, including Star Wars: Starfighter, a new Jedi Order movie, and James Mangold's Dawn of the Jedi, they're meant to be standalone stories.

As usual, this rumor should be taken with a grain of salt, as Kathleen Kennedy's latest statements about the future of Star Wars seem to indicate that the franchise will move away from trilogies. Kennedy revealed her thoughts on the franchise's future at a special screening of the original Star Wars print.

Kennedy told fans that a Star Wars movie "doesn’t necessarily have to connect to every little thing that’s been done in Star Wars; it can actually be a standalone story that then builds into many, many other stories." Many fans interpreted this as a sign that we won't see a trilogy of Star Wars films anytime soon. However, the latest rumors regarding The Mandalorian and Grogu suggest otherwise.

As of now, no sign from Jon Favreau or Kathleen Kennedy suggests that a trilogy could be in The Mandalorian's future. Fans have been curious about The Mandalorian's fourth season, but Favreau has remained tight-lipped. He has said that his focus is on the movie, but if the rumors of a trilogy are true, they add another layer to Favreau's intense focus. If this movie works, it would be great for Star Wars and great for him.

As an experienced filmmaker, Favreau admitted he felt limited creatively by television and its various production constraints. With a trilogy in hand, Favreau would have an opportunity to replicate the show's success on the big screen. Despite the drop in quality in The Mandalorian Season 3, the show has become a brand and has a loyal fan base. Along with Star Wars fans, Mando and Grogu fans are antsy to see their favorite duo, and the countdown to the movie's first trailer has already started.

Although these rumors don't mean much as we're still 11 months out from The Mandalorian and Grogu, as a fan, I can't deny that the idea of a Mando trilogy is an exciting one. I might even forgive Lucasfilm for maintaining a suspiciously frustrating silence about the show's future if it means getting three movies instead of one.

The Mandalorian is streaming on Disney+, and The Mandalorian and Grogu premieres May 22, 2026.
