Ewan McGregor received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on September 12, as fans, close friends, and family came out in huge numbers to honor his achievements.
McGregor was praised for his numerous memorable and iconic performances. However, the number of Star Wars fans present showed the impact the actor has had on the galaxy far, far away, as Obi-Wan Kenobi. McGregor took on the role of the young Obi-Wan in Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace. While many aspects of Lucas's prequel trilogy have been criticized, McGregor's performance was never one of them. With each film, McGregor's performance evolved and improved as much as Obi-Wan's hairstyles.
With Episode II - Attack of the Clones, the focus expanded to the complex dynamic between Obi-Wan Kenobi and his Padawan learner, Anakin Skywalker, played by Hayden Christensen, adding a new layer of depth to the story through their on-screen chemistry. That chemistry was pivotal to the films and all upcoming stories, including The Clone Wars.
Hayden was on hand to celebrate his friend and the man he calls a "brother," much to the delight of their fans. Christensen repeatedly said that he's been in awe of Ewan's career, which is filled with celebrated performances. It's McGregor the man who has left a lifelong impact on Christensen. He fondly recalled meeting his on-screen Jedi Master for the first time at a studio in Australia, where McGregor's warm and friendly nature put Christensen at ease.
As Christensen joked about his friend and brother "chopping both his legs off" and "leaving him to die" near a volcano, McGregor and the crowd cheered loudly. The most telling sign that the duo are best friends is how Ewan kept his hand on Hayden's shoulder throughout his speech, which Christensen ended by thanking his friend for being the best Jedi Master. The duo hugged after Hayden finished his speech with, "I love you, brother."
"It’s been an honor and a thrill to get to work with you and swing a lightsaber with you and, more than all of it, call you a friend. I love you, brother."Hayden Christensen.
Christensen also expressed his sincere hope that McGregor plays Obi-Wan again, referring to him as "Star Wars' gold."
"To watch him embody this character, it’s like watching magic… the kind that really makes you believe in something bigger. He wasn’t just playing Obi-Wan. He was Obi-Wan. He is Obi-Wan. I really hope we get more Obi-Wan because this man is just Star Wars gold."Hayden Christensen.
I got the impression that they love playing their characters, and, above all, they appreciate the opportunity to work together again, perhaps more than anything. Their shared experiences in Star Wars are probably the kind they can't quite explain to anyone except each other. Seeing their brotherhood, I can only hope that we get another season of Obi-Wan Kenobi or another project where this legendary duo can bring their characters to life once again.
The entire ceremony was a delight for Star Wars fans, yet also deeply emotional, as Ewan McGregor's star is poignantly situated near the late Carrie Fisher's, which he graciously acknowledged. In many ways, McGregor and Christensen are this generation's Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, and Harrison Ford. They'll be friends for life, and it's a pleasure to see that despite the tragedy of their on-screen relationship, their off-screen one has become stronger with time. In a world where everything is transient, it's heartening to know that some connections are as timeless and unbreakable as the one between Ewan and Hayden.
