'Obi-Wan Kenobi' is George Lucas's favorite Star Wars series
Everyone loves it when their work is celebrated, even George Lucas, whose career has been honored in many ways throughout the decades.
Lucas, who's set to be honored with a Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival on May 25th, appreciated one recent Star Wars project for recognizing his work on Star Wars: Episodes 1-3. According to Culture Slate, Lucasfilm Story Group Member Pablo Hidalgo has shared that Lucas was pleased to see his work on the Star Wars prequel trilogy honored in Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Obi-Wan Kenobi premiered in May of 2022 and picked up 10 years after the events of Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith, directed by George Lucas. Episode III ends with Anakin Skywalker becoming the Sith Lord, Darth Vader, and Obi-Wan Kenobi going into hiding on Anakin's home planet, Tatooine.
Speaking about Lucas's feelings on the project, Hidalgo explained that he was always supportive of the series and pleased with how it was made:
"Early on, there was a conversation had with George about what his thoughts were and whether or not he bought the whole concept of taking Obi-Wan and Vader again. And he was a hundred percent supportive. And I’ve heard tell that it’s been one of his favorite things to come out of Star Wars, because he recognizes so much of what he did in the prequels basically brought forward and celebrated in a way that I’m sure surprised him."
- Pablo Hidalgo.
Over the years, Lucas has shared his thoughts on the Star Wars sequels but has mostly remained out of the spotlight and kept his opinions to himself. Recently, Tony Gilroy revealed that Lucas called him to express how much he loved Rogue One. Lucas has been spotted on the set of The Mandalorian, but fans shouldn't get their hopes up that Lucas will return and direct an episode. However, Hidalgo's statement shows that George watches all the new content, and like the rest of us, he has his favorites. Although Obi-Wan Kenobi received its share of criticism, the series nailed the complicated relationship between fallen Jedi Anakin Skywalker and his former Master, Kenobi.
Does George Lucas want another season of Obi-Wan Kenobi, or is he okay with the story ending where it did? With Disney now pushing for more Star Wars movies, we hope Lucas will pay a visit to the sets of one of the many upcoming films. Perhaps, he'll show up to the set of The Mandalorian & Grogu which is set to be the first among four new Star Wars films to go into production.
Obi-Wan Kenobi is streaming on Disney+.
