LEGO Star Wars: The origins of Jedi Bob
The latest miniseries full of minifigs is here! LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy has arrived on Disney+ and is full of the hilarious antics that these specials have been known for. One of the series' main characters is Jedi Bob, voiced by Bobby Moynihan. Jedi Bob, whose full name is Bobarian Afol, is a relatively new character to being on screen in a galaxy far, far away, but his fan-made origins date back to the prequel trilogy.
StarWars.com's Amy Richau shared that Bob "is based on a minifig well-known to LEGO collectors. The minifig in question was an unnamed Jedi Knight in an Attack of the Clones Republic Gunship LEGO set released in 2002. As this Jedi didn’t appear to match up with any of the Jedi present at the Battle of Geonosis, he became something of a mystery. At some point, fans started referring to the minifig as 'Jedi Bob,' and the legend was born. It’s even referenced in the book LEGO Star Wars: The Visual Dictionary."
Richau also spoke with Moynihan and executive producer Benji Samit to discuss Bob's role in Rebuild the Galaxy.
Moynihan, who is a longtime Star Wars voice actor with roles in Star Wars Resistance, Star Wars: Visions, and more, revealed that he kept a minifig of Bob in his pocket when he recorded his lines. Growing up playing with LEGO, he felt like this role was made for him, saying, "I am a lazy Jedi and it’s my dream role. Jedi Bob knows he’s not the best Jedi — he talks about how he’s bad at using a lightsaber — and I love that. It makes me so happy to play a Jedi who isn’t that great at it but has all the powers. It makes me laugh.”
Samit was thrilled to watch fans react to Jedi Bob when the first Rebuild the Galaxy trailer dropped, "I knew people would be excited about it. I felt it in my heart. It’s been very validating to the LEGO nerd in me.”
It's cool to see a fan-made creation come to the screen in LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy. The four-episode miniseries is available on Disney+.
