Skeleton Crew: Jon Watts shares his pitch to Jon Favreau
Star Wars has released an excellent roundtable discussion with the showrunners and directors of the upcoming series Skeleton Crew. It showcases Jon Watts, Christopher Ford, Jake Schreier, Bryce Dallas Howard, and David Lowery all deep-diving into the creation of the series, working with Jude Law and the show's four child stars, and more.
One moment early on in the roundtable, Watts discusses the initial pitch process of Skeleton Crew. It's a fun scene featuring behind-the-scenes footage with Jon Favreau as Watts says:
"On the third Spider-Man, I was shooting with Jon Favreau. We were just talking, and I gave him the very, very quick pitch. And he was like, 'Would you want me to, like, produce it? Is that cool? It would be like me and Dave Filoni.' And I was like, 'Yes, Jon Favreau. That would be great!'"
- Jon Watts
Watts's work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe probably gave some weight to the idea and what he was capable of. Favreau also has a long history with the MCU as an executive producer, director, and actor, among various projects, so he's been around Watts' work.
Bryce Dallas Howard added to her excitement for the series. She shared how when she was working on Season 3 of The Mandalorian, she began asking around Lucasfilm about the pre-production of Skeleton Crew. She asked the team, "'Oh my gosh, how is it?' and they were like, 'It's so good!'" She then squealed in excitement, adding, "And so there was already a buzz on campus about it."
Skeleton Crew follows the journey of four kids named Wim (Ravi Cabot-Conyers), Fern (Ryan Kiera Armstrong), KB (Kyrana Kratter), and Neel (Robert Timothy Smith). When they stumble upon an old space ship in the woods (with its own droid SM-33 played by Nick Frost), the children go on a whirlwind adventure to find their way home, which, oddly, no one has heard of their planet. Luckily, they meet a Jedi named Jod Na Nawood (Jude Law), who agrees to help them return to their parents. Things aren't simple as a group of pirates, including Vane (Marti Matulis) from The Mandalorian and Gunter (Jaleel White), follow their captain Brutus (Fred Tatasciore) to hunt the children. The series also stars Tunde Adebimpe and Kerry Condon as Wim and Fern's parents, who realize things aren't what they seem at home.
"It's fun to be able to make something that works if you don't know anything about Star Wars," Watts finishes, "and it also works if you know everything about Star Wars."
Skeleton Crew premieres on Disney+ on December 3. You can watch the full director roundtable below.
