It has hardly been a week since Skeleton Crew ended happily for our four main heroes. Still, creators Christopher Ford and Jon Watts are inundated with questions about the future of the series' main characters, Wim, Neel, Fern, KB, and Jod Na Nawood.
That's not to say At Attin is anything less than a main character in the story, as fans, Ford, and Watts, are all interested in what's next for the planet and its people. In a conversation with ScreenRant's Joe Deckelmeier, Watts and Ford opened up about many things, including their decision to skip a redemption arc for Jod, the questions about Wim's career path, the show's lack of Mandoverse cameos, and At Attin's place in the galaxy.
While fans contemplated where Jod would end up, Watts and Ford read fan reactions every week, knowing well that Jod wouldn't be redeemed in the traditional Star Wars sense of the word. Still, Christopher Ford admits "We were scared, but I think the virtue of Jude's performance is what made that work."
Ford and Watts believe Jod does things he doesn't necessarily want to do as "he's so comfortable operating in that conflicted gray area." Christopher Ford thinks Jod grew to like the kids, but his tendency to push people away when they get too close prevents him from showing it. This might explain why he rejected Wim's offer to leave the Supervisor's chamber at the end of "The Real Good Guys."
Wim's concern for Jod, despite being treated poorly by him, showcases the compassion and empathy that define the Jedi. When asked if Wim has a future as a Jedi Knight, Watts explained that Wim has found another path and, "He might not be wanting to be a Jedi as much, especially after hanging out with Jod for that adventure, but I think he might want to be an X-wing pilot now."
Another surprising aspect of Skeleton Crew is the show's avoidance of big cameos throughout the season in favor of developing its new characters. This is similar to The Mandalorian's Season 1, which focuses on developing its main characters. Watts and Ford admit that Lucasfilm allowed them to do what they wanted with the story, but they were open to cameos if they fit into the overall story.
Watts adds that he and Ford were much more "interested in the idea of getting people to like these characters without using cameos as a crutch." Nevertheless, he doesn't rule out the possibility of characters from other Mandoverse series meeting the leads of Skeleton Crew as they grow up and find their place in the galaxy.
Speaking of a place in the galaxy, the other main character of Skeleton Crew, the planet of At Attin, and its people have been thrust into a galaxy full of problems and potential. Watts and Ford recognize that upcoming historical events in the galaxy, including the return of Grand Admiral Thrawn, and the sequel trilogy, will impact At Attin and its citizens. Although the duo has plenty of ideas for how they wish to proceed, they know a lot depends on what happens in other stories during this era, including Ahsoka Season 2 and The Mandalorian and Grogu.
Watts believes At Attin and its people will have to catch up with the rest of the galaxy quickly as "this whole new society suddenly having to get up to speed with what's actually going on in the world." With "At Attin having been this completely secluded planet that's now suddenly thrust into it," Skeleton Crew Season 2 can show us a planet struggling to find its place in a galaxy that's facing a threat on every corner.
Despite the challenges, Christopher Ford and Jon Watts seem positive about the show's future, which is promising for anyone who's hoping Disney greenlights a second season.
