How the new Skeleton Crew trailer taps into Guardians of the Galaxy vibes!
Star Wars: Skeleton Crew kicked off the month of November with a brand new trailer! The official trailer delves into the story of the upcoming series, which is about four kids who accidentally get lost in the galaxy on a ship they find.
One of the promotional points from the start has been the show would be pulling from the films of Amblin Entertainment, something that's been a big feature up to this point. Between pirates and the young protagonists, we've seen a lot of the images and teaser trailer giving nods to films like The Goonies and this official trailer definitely had some E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial vibes going.
However, one major change this official trailer did was go in a new hype-inducing direction:
This went full Guardians of the Galaxy.
The popular Marvel Cinematic Universe film is known for its 80's vibes, jamming soundtrack, and a very specifically kind of font with its text. Skeleton Crew dove headfirst for the first time into this side of 80s goodness.
The best part of this, for me, is using an actual pop song in the trailer (sort of). The song is "Major Tom (Coming Home)" by Peter Schilling, but it seems like it's being sung in Huttese. If they're doing an entire 80's soundtrack but in the languages of Star Wars, this is already my new favorite Star Wars series. I've wanted more music genres in the Star Wars universe, and this would be such a great way to do it.
Even some of the shots in the new trailer are similar to the MCU film. The kids arrive in a place very similar to Knowhere to get food and directions. Later, with the pirates, one location appears to be a nice golden city like Xandar, under siege by a new threat just like in the first movie.
From the font to evoking 80s film, Skeleton Crew feels like it's setting up to be an incredibly fun show, something that Guardians of the Galaxy has always been known for. This isn't going to be the dire, bleak world of something like Andor. This will be a Goonies pirate adventure while the parents are stuck in E.T., but with a wily Jedi and four kids trying to get home to a banger soundtrack. I can't wait for this show. Give it to me now!
