The first 28 minutes of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was shown to a select few journalists, and now the scenes and descriptions are starting to hit the internet. Here now, we have some spoiler-filled information for you, please proceed with caution…
Warning: Rogue One SPOILERS Below
USA Today was part of the select group of journalists that was invited to see the first 28 minutes of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and they’ve shared the broad strokes of that half hour with the rest of the world. I’m assuming if you’ve come this far down into the post, then you aren’t afraid of Rogue One spoilers, so let’s get right into it, shall we?
First up, the piece confirms there is no opening crawl, but we already knew that. Rogue One starts with the Erso family and we get to see Jyn Erso as a young child. Jyn is given a necklace with a Kyber crystal in it, by her mother Lyra Erso.

"At the same time, a shuttle carrying Director Orson Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn) and his Imperial Death Trooper squad arrives at the Erso homestead to find Jyn’s dad, scientist-turned-farmer Galen Erso (Mads Mikkelsen). Wanting to keep his family safe, Galen confronts Krennic (who wants Galen’s help on the stalled Death Star construction project) and balks when the Imperial officer talks about the super weapon of mass destruction bringing peace to the galaxy."
Jyn’s life begins a lot like Rey’s from The Force Awakens. She is ripped from her family. It sounds like her mother is killed by Krennic’s Death Troopers, or Krennic himself, and then her father is taken away on Krennic’s shuttle to work on the Death Star. Jyn is hiding in a tunnel, where she is found by Saw Gerrera.

"Years later, Jyn is a prisoner in an Imperial labor camp on Wobani, and Rebels bust her out when cargo pilot Bodhi Rook (Riz Ahmed) tells the good guys that Galen is a major key to the Death Star project"
Whoa! It is Bodhi Rook who alerts the Rebel Alliance about Galen Erso? The Rogue One trailers make it sound as if some random transmission sent by Galen himself is the reason why Mon Mothma is recruiting her. Could the leaders of the Rebel Alliance be manipulating Jyn Erso because they know of her father?

USA Today calls Chirrut Îmwe “Force-sensitive” but that could be just because they aren’t sure what to label him as…or because Chirrut really is Force-sensitive and Lucasfilm has been hiding his abilities under a lot of smoke and mirrors with all the trailers this whole time.

Finally, there is one hilarious line from K-2SO who is attempting to act like his former Imperial droid self and get Cassian Andor through an Imperial checkpoint. He smacks Cassian in the mouth and says:
“There’s a fresh one if you mouth off again.”

I literally cannot wait to see that scene. I have been saying all along that Kaytoo would be the new BB-8 or the R2-D2 of Rogue One. The comic relief of the film and everything we have seen from Alan Tudyk and all the footage from the trailers only confirms it.
