The man responsible for reviving the Star Wars cinematic universe — J.J. Abrams — has been singing the praises of Mark Hamill and his role in the sequel to The Force Awakens — Star Wars: The Last Jedi….

Director J.J. Abrams has been heaping some mighty high praise on the future of the Star Wars cinematic universe, as of late. He recently gushed over the untilted Han Solo Star Wars standalone film, and on top of that, the man behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens has been singing the praises of Luke Skywalker actor, Mark Hamill.

According to New York Daily News, J.J. Abrams, while at the Oscar Wilde Awards in Los Angeles, said that Hamill should win an Academy Award for his role in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

"I think we are all going to be very upset if he does not win an Oscar, and no one more upset than Mark."

You can mark that down as hyperbole if you wish, but let us not forget, it was Abrams who wisely decided to hold Hamill’s role in Star Wars: The Force Awakens a complete secret until the film premiered in December of 2015.

And, although Mark Hamill was only on-screen for all of a few seconds — at the end of the film — he conveyed so much with just one look, that it felt like he had spoken an entire page of dialogue. One could say that was certainly a precursor to an Oscar-winning run for The Last Jedi.

While Mark Hamill has never been nominated, he has been a presenter at the 1978 Academy Awards, just a year after his breakout role in Star Wars: A New Hope. It would be amazing to see Hamill win such a prestigious honor for the role that brought him into the spotlight.
