When Can We Expect Another Rogue One Trailer?

With one trailer under our belts and less than seven months till the premiere of the film, when can we expect to see another Rogue One: A Star Wars Story trailer?

One trailer is never enough for Star Wars fans, and as soon as one comes out we’re looking forward to the next one, and the next, until finally the movie itself comes out in theaters. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will premiere in less than seven months, on December 16th, and we already have our first trailer for it. Now it’s just a matter of guessing when the next trailer will break.

Let’s take a look at the pattern of release for The Force Awakens trailers and see if there are any similarities. The first teaser for The Force Awakens was released Thanksgiving 2014, more than a year out from its release. We only just got a trailer for Rogue One in March, so there’s not much similarity there. However, Episode VII‘s first full trailer debuted at Star Wars Celebration in April 2015, which lines up more with Rogue One‘s first trailer date. The final full trailer appeared on YouTube in October 2015. October of this year sounds about right for a third trailer for Rogue One, as well, as it’s the last possible moment to get potential audiences to that final level of pre-premiere hype.

Yes, we may get more than one trailer for Rogue One before it hits theaters in December. The Force Awakens developed a specific marketing strategy with releasing three trailers. Each one got fans more and more hyped up until we couldn’t possibly contain any more excitement. I’m not sure Rogue One can do that with just two trailers, as it has the added work of introducing an entirely new cast of characters (aside from Mon Mothma and Darth Vader) and getting non-fans excited about a film which is entirely separate from the saga films.

I predict we will get either a Rogue One trailer at Star Wars Celebration Europe in July, five months out from the theater premiere date, or a behind the scenes video like the one shown at San Diego Comic Con last year for The Force Awakens. This trailer or behind the scenes video will be followed by a final trailer in October or November.

More from Dork Side of the Force

There’s good reason to expect a Rogue One trailer at Celebration Europe. For one thing, it’s Star Wars Celebration, and what better place and time than to premiere a new trailer for your new Star Wars movie? For another, they can’t not show footage of Rogue One because 1) we’re so close to the premiere and 2) leaked pages from a Rogue One Visual Guide have given us the names of the main characters; if Star Wars Celebration doesn’t give us any official news, fans will be disappointed and be even more compelled to go digging around for more leaked spoilers.

Rest assured, however, that we will be getting news about Rogue One out of Star Wars Celebration. The first panel of the event is a Rogue One panel hosted by director Gareth Edwards and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, and featuring as-yet unnamed “special guests,” who are probably the cast of the film. Something’s going down that first day of Celebration, July 15th, and I have a good feeling about it.
