Disney has pulled off a major win by bringing on the creators and showrunners of HBO’s Game of Thrones to write and produce a new series of Star Wars film.
Since 2011, Game of Thrones has been the flagship series for HBO. In fact, some might argue the show was the catalyst that ushered in the new golden age of television. The showrunners/creators for Thrones — David Benioff and Dan Weiss — are a major part of that success, and once the show’s eighth and final season ends in 2019, the pair will be taking their talents to Lucasfilm where they’ll write and produce a whole new series of Star Wars films.
According to StarWars.com, this new Star Wars film series will be separate from the Skywalker saga, as well as the new trilogy The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson is currently developing. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy had high praise for the creative pair:

"David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today. Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting."
She’s not wrong. As the showrunners for Game of Thrones, Benioff and Weiss have had to adapt George R.R. Martin’s much-beloved series of books A Song of Ice and Fire, a series filled with rich and deeply woven tapestries of characters, intermixed with political intrigue, the occasional use of magic, dragons, and ice zombies. Yeah, I think these guys can handle Star Wars.
Benioff and Weiss released a joint statement:
"In the summer of 1977 we traveled to a galaxy far, far away, and we’ve been dreaming of it ever since. We are honored by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of Game of Thrones is complete."

Of course, there is no information on what type of stories Benioff and Weiss will be telling, and there is no release date, or for that matter, a start date for when the pair will begin their journey into a galaxy far, far away.
