This new Star Wars Forces of Destiny episode reveals some touching details about the relationship between Anakin Skywalker and his Padawan, Ahsoka Tano…
In the second installment of the new Star Wars Forces of Destiny season title Unexpected Company, we see a reunion of some of my favorite characters: Anakin Skywalker, Padme Amidala, and Ahsoka Tano (who is my absolute favorite Star Wars character of all time).
The brief episode focuses on a mission (the details of which we never get) that Anakin and Padme hope to embark on alone in order to get some quality time together. According to Anakin, he had to jump through a bunch of hoops to secure a spot as Padme’s protective detail.
Unfortunately for them, their amorous arrangement is thrown off when Ahsoka shows up on the scene ready to head out with them. Apparently, Master Obi-Wan suggested she tag along – maybe he was a little suspicious of the relationship between Anakin and Padme (I mean…they aren’t super subtle).
Suddenly in a hurry to get this mission over with, Anakin takes an ill-advised route and the trio come out of hyperspace right in the midst of a Separatist fleet. Padme and Ahsoka rush to the guns while Anakin takes the helm. A cannon blast from one of the Separatist ships hits the gun turret where Padme is stationed.

As smoke fills the cabin, Anakin abandons the captain’s seat and rushes to Padme’s side. When the smoke clears, the two are locked in an embrace. Ahsoka gives them a knowing look and quickly takes over the ship.
The episode concludes with a short exchange between Ahsoka and Padme as they’re disembarking the ship. Padme tells Ahsoka that she and Anakin make a great team. With her signature knowing smirk, Ahsoka replies: “I could say the same about the two of you.”
In an emotional moment, the two women hold each other’s gaze and so many things pass between them in that brief moment. The animation is so fantastic at capturing the initial fear on Padme’s face when she realizes her relationship with Anakin has been discovered. Then, you see that fear soften into relief and gratitude when she realizes Ahsoka isn’t going to turn them in, that she understands.
This may be just a short, animated episode, but it holds so much emotion in it. Especially this last scene. Ahsoka knows that Anakin is breaking the Jedi code and that there is something going on between him and Padme. She may not know everything but she knows enough, but out of loyalty to Anakin and Padme, she stays quiet.
It kind of makes you wonder though, doesn’t it? Was Ahsoka really doing Anakin a favor by keeping it quiet? Would things have ended differently if his relationship with Padme had been revealed? Ahsoka kept quiet out of love and loyalty to her mast, but should she have?
