Donald Glover absolutely needs to write and direct a Star Wars Lando Calrissian film or TV series. More Donald Glover, please!
The reviews and want for Solo: A Star Wars Story are a mixed bag, but one thing that people agree on is that Donald Glover delivers the goods as Lando Calrissian in the movie.
Donald Glover truly belongs among the clouds, with swagger and diversity radiantly glowing from the versatile megastar. It’s Donald Glover’s galaxy, and everybody else is just living in it.
Billy Dee Williams himself even believes that he is the man for the job, praising the young man in the process.
"“They couldn’t have found a better young man to do it. He’s an extraordinary young man.”"
Donald Glover reveals that Billy Dee Williams had a piece of sage advice, easing his mind in the process.
"“We sat down and I had a bunch of ideas of what it was going to be and he kinda threw them all out the window. He was like, ‘I don’t know, be charming.’ That was sage advice. He was like ‘keep it simple stupid.’ Like really did that to me and it was awesome.”"

Now that Donald Glover has Billy Dee’s stamp of approval, we can rest easy knowing that Lando Calrissian is in great hands. It bodes the question, should he remain a secondary character? Or, does he need his own story via films or even a TV series?
Generally, I would say no to secondary characters getting their own series or Star Wars standalone film. Han Solo getting a movie makes sense, because he’s a main player in the saga, plus George Lucas requested such thing when he sold the franchise to Disney for a cool 4 billion dollars.
An Obi-Wan Kenobi film makes perfect sense also since he’s arguably the most beloved man of the entire franchise. But, secondary characters with their own movies would water down the franchise.
As much as I love the vibes of Max Reebo, a Star Wars story featuring the cool Ortolan would be lame. Or, a Mon Mothma: A Star Wars Story wouldn’t be able to carry much weight for a full film.
Some characters do not need their own movie. Lucasfilm needs to stick to comics and books for the obscure characters getting more love and depth.
However, Lando Calrissian is not one of those characters. A film or even a running live-action TV show featuring Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian is a fantastic idea. Not only does he embody the vibes and swagger of Lando Calrissian, but his talents extend far beyond acting need to be tapped in even more.
The hit show Atlanta is written and directed by Donald Glover, where he became the first black director to win an Emmy in the comedy arena. Giving him a Star Wars film or series is something that Lucasfilm needs to take full advantage of and there are plenty of stories to tell.
A prime example is the Lando comic run from a few years ago proving that he could pull off a full story on his own, and the story was so intriguing. I kept thinking that I wanted to see more him on the big screen.
Plus, Donald Glover’s diversity is much needed in a galaxy far, far away, which has lacked in giving people of color leading roles in Star Wars, which he expresses himself brilliantly on SNL.

Lucasfilm should take full advantage of the talents of Donald Glover, who portrays a character who has enough swagger and interest to hold down a movie or TV show, while at the same time enhancing the franchise.
