The Mandalorian & Grogu: A path to Din Djarin removing his helmet

The Mandalorian & Grogu may mark a pivotal turn in Din Djarin's character arc, which could result in the titular Mandalorian permanently removing his helmet.

If you thought Din Djarin removing his helmet would become a regular thing, or at least something he admits isn't an unforgivable sin, The Mandalorian Season 3 probably proved you wrong. Many are now left wondering if the helmet dilemma is resolved for good after Din bathed in the living waters on Mandalore.

Season 3 saw Din reverting to his strict adherence to the Mandalorian creed, including the part about never removing his helmet. Still, we can't completely rule out the possibility that he'll go through something that forces him to remove it. The question is, what will it take? The truth is Din Djarin needs to go through an experience akin to Ahsoka episode 5, "Shadow Warrior," which changed Ahsoka Tano's outlook, including her outward appearance.

While you can argue that Din has already gone through many changes inwardly, including opening his heart to and adopting Grogu, his journey is far from over. He may go through more experiences that alter his perspective and force him to question his strict adherence to a rule that requires him to cover his face in front of his child. Even in the final scene of Season 3, Din is shown sitting on his porch, watching Grogu, with his helmet on. This moment is one of the season's biggest disappointments for viewers who hoped he would finally remove it – especially for Grogu's sake.

Regardless, that's not what happened, and fans have been left with the lasting image of a helmeted Din Djarin seated on his porch, watching his child play by a pond from a distance. It felt cold and distant for a man who removed his helmet in a room full of people to say goodbye to his son and, earlier on, in a room full of Imperial Officers for the sake of saving him.

How long will this continue? It depends on Pedro Pascal's availability, which may have been an issue that led to Din being helmeted throughout Season 3, but it also depends on Lucasfilm. If they want Pedro on set, they'll find a way to make it happen and tweak Din's character arc to allow enough growth in him to remove the helmet without feeling guilty about it.

Perhaps Din must go through a near-death experience like Ahsoka did in "Shadow Warrior." Maybe the Empire will clone him, which could force him to prove he's the real Din Djarin by removing his helmet, but this is a bit far-fetched. There's always been curiosity regarding what will become of the facial scan he had to complete on the planet of Morak in "Chapter 15: The Believer." The scan could be leaked to unwanted parties, putting Din Djarin at risk of exposure and potentially forcing him to break the Mandalorian code by removing his helmet. Even though the Imperial facility on Morak was destroyed, that scan can play a role in The Mandalorian & Grogu.

Another possible way is if Din discovers more about his past, especially his childhood, leading to a significant change in perspective, after which he decides to remove his helmet for Grogu. Perhaps he'll realize that removing it will benefit them, strengthen their connection, and make it easier for Din to pass on Mandalorian teachings to Grogu. Finally, something that makes him question why the rule exists and whether it benefits anyone could be the key to him forsaking his strict adherence to it.

Ultimately, Din Djarin removing his helmet shouldn't be a deal-breaker in the Mando movie. After all, Season 3 concluded with Bo-Katan Kryze, a Mandalorian who "walks both worlds," taking over the leadership of Mandalore. Given Pedro Pascal's growing popularity and undeniable charm, removing the helmet has become more justifiable than maintaining it at all costs. Moreover, fans crave more heartfelt moments between Din and Grogu, like the Season 2 finale, where their expressions after Din's helmet removal poignantly conveyed the depth of their bond.

The Mandalorian is streaming on Disney+, and The Mandalorian & Grogu premieres on May 22, 2026.
