The internet erupted last week with the announcement of Tales of the Underworld, the next installment of the Tales series. This outing features the two fan favorite bounty hunters, Cad Bane and Asajj Ventress. Immediately with the reveal of the trailer, people were discussing whether or not this will explore one of the biggest mysteries ever since Season 3 of The Bad Batch: How did Ventress come back from the dead?
Personally, I hope we never find out how she did it.
Now, to be clear, Tales would be the best format to explore this story. An anthology episode is the perfect way to tackle this mystery in about 12-15 minutes. I just hope they don't.
My reason is that I don't think everything in Star Wars needs an answer, especially in a space fantasy. Star Wars is a mythology, and it has magic built into its very core. Well, "magic" being the Force. It's a franchise that's complete with space wizards who use science-defining plasma swords as they wield this magic. George Lucas has never cared about the physics of the franchise. One of the best science-breaking examples is that he is on record that there is some oxygen in his space. The reason? He wanted cool explosions in his movie when ships went kaboom, so, therefore, his galaxy has some oxygen in the vacuum.
When it comes to stories like Star Wars, not every mystery is going to be answered. That's okay! It then allows the fandom to do fandom things like speculation and theorizing. We get to have friendly debates with friends or listen to our favorite podcasters break down their ideas. We don't need the answer for Ventress' story to work.
She's a dark sided space witch. When she perished in the novel Dark Disciple by Christie Golden, Quinlan Vos buried her in a magical pool on Dathomir that glowed green when her body slipped below the water. We learned in The Clone Wars that the Nightsisters were known to raise the dead.
That's enough for me. I don't need to know anything else about Ventress to go, "Yeah, that tracks." The same goes for Jedi Force ghosts. Sure, the Yoda episodes in The Clone Wars where he discovers the Wellspring of Life are... fine (and not my personal favorites). But even before that, I bought Force ghosts because Jedi are space wizards. They can do wizard things.
Even though I bet Tales of the Underworld will explore how Ventress came back to life, I don't think everything in Star Wars needs an explanation. To me, it weakens the mythology side of the story, and guessing is half the fun.
A little suspension of disbelief never hurt anyone.
