The Mandalorian at 5: These 5 Mando characters need a backstory
As we look back on The Mandalorian on its 5th anniversary since its launch, it's clear the show has done a fabulous job introducing endearing new characters to the franchise. These are characters we wish to see on every season of the show, and they've demonstrated steady growth as people and become close friends with the show's main character.
Although most of these characters have become series regulars and will likely appear in The Mandalorian and Grogu, we know little about their pasts.
Here are 5 characters from The Mandalorian who need a backstory.
1. The Armorer
The Armorer has been important from the first chapter of the series, but her past remains a mystery. While Emily Swallow recently told fans at a convention that she doesn't want to know The Armorer's backstory, it would be a shame not to learn a bit more about her. Where did she come from, and who is she underneath the helmet? The Armorer's skills indicate that she's been around a long time and knows everything there is to know about forging beskar. She probably knew Din since he was a foundling, and she was aware of Bo-Katan Kryze's history.
Much of what makes her so intriguing is the mystery surrounding her past, so her backstory needs to be equally compelling. We can understand why Emily Swallow is hesitant to know more about The Armorer, but her origins and the source of her in-depth knowledge regarding Mandalorian and even some Jedi history is something we'd love to discover.
2. Peli Motto
Peli is a Tatooine native and Mando's most entertaining recurring character. We know she's dated a Jawa before and has never been off-world. We'd love to see how she became a mechanic and how much of Tatooine's history she knows about. Based on The Book of Boba Fett, she knew all about the N1 Starfighter and seemed to believe in the existence of the Force. Peli may know something about the Shmi and Anakin Skywalker or even Luke Skywalker's family, but the only way to confirm this is to learn more about her past.
3. Omera
Omera was only in one episode of the series, but it raised a lot of curiosity about her past. Many hoped she would return in Season 3, but the focus was on Mandalore. If Omera does come back, we hope her past will be explained. She was the only woman in her village on Sorgan who knew how to shoot, which led to several fan theories regarding her past. Some fans speculated that she may have worked for the Empire or was related to Gideon. She's an interesting character, and her past should be explored further.
4. Migs Mayfeld
Mayfeld saw the horrors the Empire put people through, and his backstory seems rough and complicated. There's a lot of room to explore where he came from and the choices that led to his becoming the person he is in The Mandalorian Season 2, which is the last time we see him. Bill Burr's performance is another solid reason to give fans a look at Migs Mayfeld's past.
5) Din Djarin:
Surprisingly, despite being the main character, very little is known about Din Djarin's past. We know he's from Aq Vetina, and his parents were killed during the Clone Wars. A Mandalorian rescued Djarin, and he was treated as if he were one of their own. We'd love to know much more about his parents, home world, and life growing up as a foundling. How did he react to the rigid rules about wearing a helmet, and what led to his reputation as "the best in the parsec?" Did Din always have a soft spot for children, and why does he know so little about Mandalorian and Jedi history? What else has The Armorer kept a secret from Din, and how did his beef with Paz Vizsla start? This and many other questions still need to be answered.
