Unpacking Anakin's role in Ahsoka Season 2: Why it's more than fan service

Whether it's revisiting his role as Ahsoka Tano's master or returning to an arc from The Clone Wars', I am convinced Dave Filoni has big plans for Skywalker in Ahsoka Season 2.

Snips and Skyguy's fans are thrilled about Hayden Christensen's return as Anakin Skywalker in Ahsoka Season 2, but Dave Filoni's plans for Skywalker may extend beyond fan service. Recently, Hayden Christensen has pulled out of a few fan conventions, and an account dedicated to the actor shared that he's unable to make an appearance with Ian McDiarmid in late October.

This fan shared information from Spacecon San Antonio that states Hayden will be busy filming for Ahsoka well into October. There's a lot to unpack here: Firstly, filming for Ahsoka started immediately after Star Wars Celebration in Japan, and if it continues through the end of October, it means this season will take at least six months to wrap production.

Furthermore, Hayden already pulled out of a convention in July, citing "night shoots" as the reason he can't attend. It now appears that Christensen is booked and busy due to Ahsoka season 2 for at least the next couple of months. We're not sure how much he'll be filming, but it doesn't seem like a stretch to say that Christensen may have more to do next season.

Some may scream "fan service" as the reason why Christensen will be heavily involved in season 2, but I'm beginning to see a bigger reason why Ahsoka's Master has to be there. Ahsoka season 2 will delve into an aspect of Star Wars mythology that hasn't been explored in live-action. The final few seconds of season 1 revealed crucial elements for next season. We saw Baylan Skoll standing on a statue of the Mortis Gods, a convor appeared on Peridea, and the finale ended with a shot of the Force-ghost of Anakin Skywalker.

If you've watched The Clone Wars, you should be able to piece together what all this seems to be pointing to. In The Clone Wars, Season 3, episodes "Overlords", "Altar of Mortis", and "Ghosts of Mortis", the true meaning of Anakin's status as 'The Chosen One' was explored. We witnessed the extent of Anakin's powers, as he transferred the Daughter's life essence into Ahsoka's lifeless body. He was able to save his Padawan, but Anakin was offered a permanent position by 'The Father', who requested that he stay behind on Mortis and help to keep the balance in the Force.

The other two divine entities, 'The Son' and 'The Daughter', represent the light and dark side of the Force. The Father told Anakin he was too old to carry on, and the task would fall on Anakin. Skywalker refused to stay and chose a path that would lead to his downfall, despite The Father's warnings. In Ahsoka season 2, Anakin may be given another chance to take over The Father's place as the keeper of the balance in the universe.

If Anakin is The Father, season 2 would likely revisit Ahsoka's connection to The Daughter. Morai, a female convor from Mortis, has followed Ahsoka for decades. She's appeared in various important episodes, including The Mandalorian, Chapter 13, 'The Jedi', and Ahsoka. Fans have theorized that Ahsoka might be The Daughter, which means she's the embodiment of the light side of the Force. Anakin as 'The Father' and Ahsoka as 'The Daughter' cements their mentor and mentee relationship further.

This is just one theory regarding Anakin's significance to Ahsoka season 2. If it turns out to be true, Dave Filoni can't be accused of fan service. The Mortis arc was one of the most memorable arcs from The Clone Wars, and it raised many questions that Ahsoka may finally answer. My only hope is that Dave Filoni insists on making this season at least 10 episodes long, because apart from Ahsoka, characters like Ezra Bridger, Grand Admiral Thrawn, Hera Syndulla, and Garazeb Orrelios deserve more screen time than they had last season.

Ahsoka season 2 premieres next year on Disney+.
