RUMOR: Dave Filoni's Star Wars movie might be canceled if Mandalorian movie fails

According to a new rumor, The Mandalorian movie's box office performance may determine the fate of Dave Filoni's Star Wars film, with the latter possibly being turned into a miniseries if Mando flops at the box office.

A year ago, Lucasfilm announced The Mandalorian and Grogu, and to this day, there's no clarity on what this means for The Mandalorian's future on Disney+.

While some sources have claimed The Mandalorian and Grogu is The Mandalorian Season 4 tweaked and edited into a two-hour movie, a new report from insider Daniel Richtman suggests the opposite for Dave Filoni's Mandalorian-era crossover film, which could be turned into a Disney+ miniseries if the Mandalorian movie flops.

Via ComeBookMovie, Richtman says, "I hear that if the Mando film flops, they'll reconsider their plans and turn the crossover film into a miniseries. Lucasfilm is reportedly going to play it 'safe' with their shows moving forward - whatever that means."

As usual, take these rumors with a grain of salt, maybe even two grains, as there's been an unusually high influx of rumors about future Star Wars projects over the past couple of months. Every day, Richtman or another source brings new rumors and unsubstantiated claims that send the fandom into a tizzy. Along with possible plot details from The Mandalorian and Grogu, this latest rumor suggests the Dave Filoni movie may never see the light of day.

It does seem ironic that if this rumor is correct, Disney decided to forego a fourth season of their most-watched original series in favor of a movie. But they're so insecure about how it may or may not perform that the fate of Filoni's movie is tied to it. It sounds ridiculous to turn a potentially era-defining crossover event, which has endless cinematic potential, into a series for Disney+ while the future of their biggest Star Wars live-action hit hangs in the balance.

While it's understandable that the ratings of recent Star Wars shows, including The Acolyte and Skeleton Crew, may force Disney to question their decisions regarding the future of Star Wars, their decisions thus far have left most fans puzzled. The Mandalorian should've remained on Disney+, and Lucasfilm should've gone ahead with a fourth season. Instead, they decided to milk its success, and now, the fate of future films reportedly rests on its performance.

Lucasfilm's focus should be on making The Mandalorian and Grogu the best Star Wars movie since Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. As of now, the Star Wars social media accounts have been accused of ignoring Mandalorian fans, and they failed to acknowledge Mando's 5th anniversary in November. That's a careless attitude to have about your biggest streaming success, whose success at the box office is crucial to the future of Star Wars.

Regardless, we don't know if these rumors are credible, and along with the apparent Mando movie leaks, this "news" sounds ridiculous and unbelievable. The Mandalorian and Grogu just finished production, Dave Filoni was still writing Ahsoka Season 2 when he spoke to the media at the Skeleton Crew premiere. Filoni's crossover film is a long way off, so it's doubtful Lucasfilm is worried about Filoni's movie for the time being.

There are several Star Wars movies in the works, and an era-defining crossover movie's fate shouldn't be dependent on how The Mandalorian and Grogu will perform.

The Mandalorian is streaming on Disney+ and The Mandalorian and Grogu premieres May 22, 2026.
