Andor has put many Star Wars actors into consideration for accolades for their fine work in the series, at least when it comes to the Emmy Awards. It should be well-received, and I would be surprised if no actors are recognized for at least a nomination.
Seven actors have received Emmy nominations for their work in the franchise, whether via voice acting or live action. David Tennant is currently the only one who has won in 2013 for his voice work on The Clone Wars. He played the droid, Huyang, which he reprised in the live-action series Ahsoka and the animated series Young Jedi Adventures.
However, when it comes to film and on the big screen, only one actor has received a nomination for his work. In 1977, Alec Guinness was nominated for his portrayal of Obi-Wan Kenobi in A New Hope.
It is surprising that despite many memorable performances by several actors in the films that not one other actor has received an Oscar nomination. With the movies, set to be released in the next few years, many fans of the franchise can hope that an actor could receive a nomination.
Which Star Wars actors deserve an Academy Award?
I can think of four Star Wars actors I believe should have been nominated in the films already released. The first is in 2002. Ewan McGregor played Obi-Wan Kenobi in such a noble and humorous way in Attack of the Clones that he should've been in contention for a gold statue and at least a nomination.
In 2015, both Harrison Ford and Daisy Ridley brought much strength to old and new characters and should have been considered for their roles as Han Solo and Rey in The Force Awakens. It's hard to imagine anyone else playing Rey other than Ridley, who brought much strength to her role.
Justin Cheng of Variety spoke of Ridley's performance in the film. "Ridley, in a doozy of a breakout role, is terrific as a young woman not yet sure what to make of the powerfully beckoning Force, or of the glorious and terrifying destiny that might await her." In addition, Ford's characterization of Han Solo was so important in passing the torch to the franchise that it is what made The Force Awakens endearing worldwide.
In 2018, I believe one of the biggest tragedies was not only the killing off of Val in Solo: A Star Wars Story, but also the recognition Thandie Newton failed to receive for the role. She brought a lot of old-school female action stars to the Val, but played it with vulnerability. She was not supposed to be killed off early in the film, but it was decided to have her sacrifice herself during filming. I wonder if she had been in the remainder of the film, if she would have received more praise for her work.
Now with new movies set to be released over the next years like Star Wars: Starfighter and The Mandalorian & Grogu, all Star Wars fans can hope that the actors they have seen on the big screen will also see on the red carpet being honored for their work in the franchise.
